The Millionaires Express Dir by Sammo Hung
Another fun film coming from Sammo. A very goofy, overly complicated setup with 4-5 sub plots (I noticed he loves to do this, Pedicab Driver is the same). But he's so damn entertaining and the situations are ridiculous. Fight scenes while kind of few and far between for the first half are very well done and the film culminates in a huge epic fight 4 different things going on at once. Sammo & Cynthia Rockheart have a quick but impressive fight. I definitely recommend checking this one out if you are a fan of big HK action films with Sammo's goofy nature.



Eyes of Fire Dir by Avery Crounse
I've been wanting to see this film for years, I've heard it was a great little witchcraft/folk horror film from the 80's that has never seen a release outside of VHS (this is incorrect, there was a Laser Disc release). Well after years of waiting for some one to do a bluray I just gave up and watched the VHS rip of it I have, the quality was shit but hey it kind of reminded me of watching this shit as a kid on shitty little TV in the dark so bonus points for that. It's an odd movie, the acting is weird and it feels quite low budget. But the mythology they use and imagery is quite fascinating even though it's done with in their limits tech wise (lots of crossfades between shots to "superimpose" something in there). I enjoyed it a lot and would love to see a restored version.

I waited years to watch this and it's announced two days after I watch?!?!? Such is life. That boxset looks pretty damn incredible, I just can't justify spending $200 on blurays right now when I have all these damn records to buy. Kind of surprised to see Wheatley's A Field In England in there.

I've just received a copy of Nightmares, AKA Stage Fright. Haven't seen it in absolute ages so it will be an interesting watch. this is a new release Bluray from Umbrella in Australia.

After watching it I found out I watched a DVD-rip with a duration of 95 minutes in stead of the uncut BR version that runs 100 minutes. So I probably will rewatch it in a couple of years.

I liked it but it was nothing I expected. I really loved House of Laughing Windows and Zeder did really feel like a Pupi Avati movie based on that experience. But it wasn't very suspenseful. And it also did not really grab me. I am very curious about the score though. I loved the recurring motive I heard but the rest of the score I can't even remember now.

Can't wait to watch this again. I caught a 35mm print a few years ago & really enjoyed it.

I did like Copycat a lot. I think I have seen Spike Lee's Summer of Sam. I must have!

The Cell… one of my first DVDs I ever bought. Had it imported from the US. Those where the days :-)

Evil Cat Dir by Dennis Yu
What does one do when an evil cat demon is released upon the world after it's tomb is opened? You shoot it in the heart with a magic arrow shot from a magic bow! This movie was silly, I had an enjoyable time with it. Tons of cheesy effects, ridiculous over the top acting (the master loves to hit people on their chest to emphasize what he's talking about). This is not necessary Cat III viewing but worth tracking down if you are in the moody for absurd HK horror/action. I had to rip the subs out of a file that played back at 29.97fps, merge them with a file that played back at the proper 23.97fps but also had hard coded Mandarin subs, luckily VLC allows you to add a black background to your subs so I could read the new subs over the hard coded stuff.



Saint Maud Dir by Rose Glass
I don't have much to say about this one other than it was quite intense. I loved the ending. It's a small film but it's captivating to watch.



Evangelion 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon A Time Dir by Hideaki Anno, Kazuya Tsurumaki, Mahiro Maeda
Nine years later we finally get the conclusion to the Evangelion Rebuild series of films. Part 3 left off on a major cliffhanger and nine years is a long time to live up to fan expectations. Except the general consensus from fans was they hated part 3. Well Anno doubles down and finishes the story he set out to tell with Rebuild and doesn't compromise on it for the finale. I think most fans that I've seen were happy with what we got here. I personally thought it was pretty damn good and about what I expected/wanted from the finale. There were some incredible spectacle for the fights, long sections of the film that make you hate the character you already hate (Shinji is a bitch). We got a little more dialog and screen time from Misato who is one of my favorite characters and one that I was annoyed got sidelined in part 3. These films get weird and philosophical, the ending is wild and very much a different conclusion than End of Eva but we all knew that was going to be the case. Do I like Rebuilds more than the original series? No, not even close but they are what they are and I enjoyed watching them. I will rewatch the series this fall. @dollar if you are reading this, watch the damn series already :P

Lately when I want to watch a movie together with my girlfriend I tend to pick one that has been released by A24. My girlfriend is very difficult regarding movies. And most flicks I love she hates :-) But those A24 seem to do the trick most of the time.

Recently we watched Gloria Bell. Very enjoyable.



And Room. I missed that movie completely but I was floored after watching it. Tremendous movie.



Before I put on Room we started watching Krisha. Although we both were very intrigued I had to turn it off after 15 minutes because it was a bit too unnerving. It has a very interesting score with lots of bleeps and it is filmed very shaky. This is not a bad thing at all because it really makes you feel part of the anxiety the main character feels because of the environment she is in. It was simply too much for my girlfriend to handle at that point :-)

Trey Shults made a bigger noise with It Comes At Night, but have to say I prefer Krisha. Interesting background to the project too - shot with various family members, in a family home.
