Having spent some time dipping into the Rough Trade book today, just finished a re-watch of THEY LIVE.

I can't believe I never spotted those Ghostbusters PKE Meters before, they're so clearly visible! A great fun watch as ever, the dialogue never fails to make me laugh aloud, even on my own and after countless viewings, and the human-on-formaldehyde-face violence never fails to have me cheering!

Starring Kirk Douglas. And the great Giuliano Gemma. It is a heist movie. With an impressive car chase.

The plot resembles Dirty Harry a bit. Great movie.

Yep, Jack Reacher 2 was a bit of a dud.

Which was a shame, because I actually really liked the first one, it was the sort of low key no frills action thriller they don’t make anymore. Also Herzog just showing up there.

I took advatange of super bowl deals and treated my self to a 4K 65” screen, and last night I christened it with the new suspiria and Mandy.

Suspiria was weirdly political but noncommittal to the point, too long, kind of boring, not visually striking the way the original is, doesn’t bother using ANY goblin music, thom Yorke sings at random points of the score, other than “there’s witches at a dance academy in Germany” and some character names there’s almost no similarities in plot...and despite all that I think I ended up liking it for its own sake. Not sure I’d go back, but it was something.

Mandy....so I was supposed to see this in theaters and there was a water main brake that shut the theater down that night, and then some of the reviews came out and made me kinda glad I hadn’t wasted the night...those reviews were wrong, I thought it was great. Wild, nuts, styalized to a fault, but overall I really dig it. Now I’ll track down the score and call it a day.

I was very happy to see it in the theater. And it did not feel too long for me. But I did not like the final 20 minutes or so. Like you I liked it for what it is. But it is not Suspiria. I will not revisit it anytime soon.

Mandy I found to be an experience. First half was a bit too much for me. Second half I loved totally.

I'm hopefully watching Suspiria this weekend. My expectations are pretty much nonexistent as from the beginning I didn't see a need to remake it and I genuinely dislike most of Thom Yorks material so him doing the score does not excite me at all. Since then I've seen a bit of positive and a bit of mediocre, nothing bashing it outright so I expect to be like you guys and like it for what it is but not much else.

Having very limited time this weekend I was only able to squeeze in one film.


Police Story 3: Super Cop. I love this film and this was the first time I was able to see the uncut Hong Kong version in Cantonese. I have only seen the US cut/dubbed version. It holds up and then some from my memories. Some really great action sequences, excellent acting and it's pretty damn funny at times too. Having revisted the original 4 Police Story films I can easily say my favorite is 1 then 3, 2 and 4. Eventually I will watch the "remakes" New Police Story and Lockdown but I have too many other great Jackie films to watch before I start dipping my toes into the weaker ones.

I knew almost nothing about this film, the only thing I had heard was Joaquin played a hit man. I thought it was quite good. Joaquin did an excellent job, the cinematography was beautiful at times, tight and clausterphobic at others. I started it late last night and even beat the "45 degree" test (if past 10 o clock and my head falls below 45 degrees from the sitting up position I tend to fall asleep). Not sure about the UK but in the US it's on Amazon Prime. The score was quite interesting at times, I'm going have a listen to it tomorrow when I get to work.

@inksby good friend of mine worked on that, there was a UK unit involved and he did location mixing. I personally didn’t get on with the film, far too many close ups of JP which indicates to me a weakness in the camera department and/or editing. But he sure can swing a hammer at a nonce!

The film left me strangely flat too. I much prefer Only God Forgives because it's less pretentious, more generally fucking nuts, and THAI KARAOKE.

Though I did like it a bit more the second time around. The actual narrative drive just wasn't there for me - predictable and over-directed for what it was (ie a B-movie exploitation flick).
