EXPEDIT from Ikea – the best way to store vinyls
cheapest, maybe... best? not!

in my case, there's only a small 4x2 element from IKEA used for records, everything bigger, i would not risk it to be honest.

These pictures of exploded Expedits are famous on the web, the problem isn't the shelves but the stupid people who haven't fixed the Expedit on the wall... :D

Sometimes it's better to read the assembly instructions! ;)

:/ Ok, that's pretty terrible... I probably wouldn't use them for high stacks either, but I'm very happy with my two 4x4... (not sure what I'll do when I run out of space, though, especially after those horrible pics :D )

The large Expedit cases are just fine. My 5x5 has not budged in over five years and it's not affixed to any wall. The two black case disasters pictured above happened because those two units were assembled in a cockeyed manner (the long slats should be horizontal and the smaller ones vertical). Perhaps a case of some hipsters deciding they were too smart to bother to read the instructions which come with the unit.

PS...they're called records not vinyls.

Se Vero's "shelf disaster" photos remind me of an embarrassing story, something that really happened to me.

Years back, I came home late one night (a little high), and as I entered my front room I went into immediate shock: I had been burglarized! Vandalized! Stuff everywhere, books and lps scattered across the floor, my turntable busted, broken shit and glass and whatnot flung all across the floor! After having a heart attack, then stalking round the flat with a large plank of wood, samurai style, shouting "if you're still here mutherfucker i'm going to fucks you up!!!", I stopped sobbing, calmed somewhat and picked up the phone to call the feds.

I think it was as I dialed the second of the three 9s that the penny dropped: my shelves had all collapsed, like dominos.

(Murderous) DIY was the case (to paraphrase Snoop!)

Shameful......shameful.....

hahahah discosucks mate, that's a funny story. i must admit i'm always concerned about burglars when i leave my home for more than one day, but not too worried about my records collection then - vinyl is just too heavy to move it down from the 4th floor. :)

I have some fairly functional rather than aesthetic shelving but want to ask the forum what they would use instead/ recommend for large scale storage? I must say the Expedit looks pretty sweet, but there seems to be differing views. My girlfriend's dad has offered to make a dozen or so wooden cubes, finished examples of which can be viewed at the top of the picture below, which I might varnish or paint and stack in giant triangle?? :) These aren't really a storage answer however, more nice furniture....

@Oiche - coincidentally, my shelves are similar to the expedit, however, a friend of mine (a cabinetmaker, luckily for me) has built me 5 cabinets that are 5 squares high. just have them set up side by side. i'm due for a 6th very soon. :)

I kinda like those little cube thingies...perhaps you can stack them in interesting patterns throughout the entire house... My only suggestion in general w/ regards to shelving is to keep wooden shelves narrow (width wise no more than 2-feet across). The nice thing with the Expedits is that each shelf is reinforced vertically every 13". This prevents bowing which will happen w/ any oversized wooden shelf (as seen with your black ones above) as records weigh a ton.

I have a bunch of the old Per Madsen rackit record racks and was bummed when he shut down. I bought enough in his closing down sale to see me through my planned usage for a few years but you know how that goes...full within a year. I found some second hand ones but soon filled those up too.

I was very pleased when someone else started making the same thing:

http://twocanhifi.com/index.html

I now have a whole bunch of these and can't tell the difference between the new ones and the old ones.

This is more expensive than the ikea route but it's higher quality and more modular then the big units and you can work round windows etc. Also when you move you can just move the racks individually with the records in them.

I apologize for helping sidetrack this thread, as there's already a lengthy one about 'storing your vinyl records' elsewhere. In the mean time, here's some more eye candy from my shelves...

@layne Yes indeed, its nice when you can get tailor made! Usually means good quality too. I got some friends of mine to sort my CDs out and build me a unit. Even though I'm not really a fan, they mount up! Unfortunately, this source is no longer available.

@karloff Youre right of course. I 'rescued' the black shelves from a kitchen I worked in years ago. They really need replacing!!
I like lazybens' storage option; will have to look for similar this side of the water.
...let’s not forget how amazing a lot of soundtrack covers can be. I know that is at least one reason I am drawn to them. check the other threads for examples.
OK...does anyone else feel gutted looking at the collapsed racks? I'm not kidding here I'm getting queasy...the horror! :o

Oiche...time to buck up...thinking of the end Lps on the top photo and the shelf sag on the bottom...the horror ;)

My useless 2¢...I like my Expedits and seeing that my original set from Target bought in 1998...still going strong...are no longer available I'd go with Expedits...the 4x4 looks like a happy medium

My home was broken into once and thank God they were considerate and just stole things...no vandalism...hell they even slid the bowl on the dining room table over to get in the window and put it back in place once in - I don't really worry about my Lps getting stolen...I think there are too many and they are too heavy in quantity - Reminds me I need to Discogs my collection for insurance reasons...listed items or a rider gets you full value...no rider = $1000...at least that was true for my wife's $10,000 in jewelry...fuuuuuug!
