I was forced to take 2 days off work by my boss, so I watched a bunch of stuff including Massacre in Dinosaur Valley, Delirium, Dawn of the Dead and The Autopsy of Jane Doe.

I really enjoyed Autopsy of Jane Doe and would definitely watch it again!

How great would a double bill of that film and The Witch be?! Especially if you managed to go into both completely cold/
no trailers or spoilers. In fact, I may just try and find a friend who has seen neither, and drop that on them.

The Witch first, Autopsy as a sort-of spiritual sequel ;)

Today was a different type of film: 2004's live action Cutey Honey! Erika Sato... *sigh* ... she can't act but *sigh*.

I have my Italian National Day celebration next week where is do a 'red' film (something bloody), a 'white' film (a b/w film) and a 'green' film (green inferno type), all of which are Italian 'classics'... well, maybe not quite classics...

I'll be watching some Powers Boothe/Walter Hill classics in the next few, in tribute to the great tough guy character actor - one of the last of a dying breed.

I've always loved Southern Comfort -a near-perfect film IMHO. Although it bears similarity to Deliverance, it transcends the comparison with it's brilliant filmmaking and terrifying subtext. And for me Ry Cooder's deceptively laid back, atmospheric score is his very best, elevating things to a whole other level of fear and icy tension which freezes the piss in your bladder. Shamefully unreleased on any format, dammit. This and The Big Easy were responsible for my going boots first into Zydeko music in my teens.



And what an ensemble cast! TK Carter, Fred Ward, Keith Carradine, Brion James, Peter Coyote...'no stars, just talent!'

I was aware of it but always believed I could live without it - wrongo! This was a lot of fun, and my man Kilmer was on fire! From the same guy who co-directed POPSTAR-Never Stop Never Stopping, which by coincidence I also caught up with this week and thoroughly rec'd. I was never big into the Lonely Island song parody stuff, bit too cloyingly self satisfied for my taste, but I like Samberg a lot and at feature length this had time to build a whole wonky world which gave me a ton of yucks.
As did MacGruber. Especially the love scenes. Hoo boy.....

I'd happily rewatch both at some point. And as for Powers...he killed it in the Richard Crenna role, naturally. Plays it 100% straight down the line, just as you should in such silly flicks!

'There's a difference between winging it and just seeing what happens. Now let's see what happens!'

Holy heck! Never come across this brutal, tongue in cheek late-entry slasher before - tipped off by Gary Pullin/Aaron Lupton's new podcast MY MOM's BASEMENT and man it's a doozy so far! Super violent and garish, stiff acting that gives the whole thing a weird unreal vibe, and a truly killer synth score by Richard Einhorn (Shock Waves, Prowler) that really sounds like it was an influence on Day of the Dead.

Im halfway in, apparently it has a gob-stopper of an ending :)

Today I went to see Alien Covenant in the theater. I liked it a lot. Fassbender is terrific.

Score by Silvano Spadaccino (never heard of him before, but the first minutes of the score sound fantastic!)
Starring Klaus Kinski and Rosalba Neri amongst others.



This was the most over the top giallo I have seen so far. Softcore porn mixed with some deaths. Score had some nice parts and a lot of elevator music. Mixed bag. An interesting experience to say the least.

The translation of the original title 'In Search of Pleasure' is so much more fitting.... 'Amuck' conjures up much more of a grindhouse / drive-in style nature - I think the film is better shot and made than that, and the US trailer below - which ramps up the sleaze - would suggest.

I picked up the Camera Obscura version which comes with a CD of the soundtrack. They always do a beautiful presentation. The latest restoration looks gorgeous too - the primary colours really pop
