Cool review of City Depths in the latest Jan 2017 issue of Starburst magazine... happy they liked it as it's also one of my very favourites ;)

Topped a surreal but happy day today - saw Rogue One at the IMAX in London, went to grab a sandwich after and who should be in the Soho branch of Pret but Anthony Daniels (!). Didn't interrupt his coffee/oil change. Swung by Forbidden Planet afterwards and saw we had a review as below. Finally, (of course) bought a record.

Some of our last cassettes have gone over to the Talbot Rd branch of the legendary Rough Trade, who were kind enough to send us this 'in situ' pic... which is pretty cool ;)

For those not in and around the London area, you can conveniently also do the online sales 'thang':

For those who don't follow us on other social media accounts, we have a cool label profile/interview (and separate review) in this month's Electronic Sound magazine. Thanks chaps!

UK folk can find copies in WHSmiths and record stores like Rough Trade etc. The rest of the world can order print copies or digital PDFs at their site if interested: http://electronicsound.co.uk/product/es26print/

Quite interesting interviews with the likes of Johann Johannsson talking Blade Runner score etc in the same ish, so in good company.

As a few of you folks have gathered... we've put up orders for two new tapes today to celebrate our first anniversary.

Going fast (thanks to all the STBC faithful who've grabbed one online), but we've kept back a handful for our retail partners too.

First off, we have a tape release of Wojciech Golczewski's 'Dark Souls'. Many of you know him from his 'Reality Check' tape - which blew me away last year. Still one of my favourite listens of 2016.

This differs from the vinyl in that it is the complete score, so 60 mins of music, more than would fit on one disk. It's dramatic stuff and have to say this mastering for cassette sounds absolutely massive - probably our biggest/fullest sounding tape release to date....

The artwork and the cassette shell with its chrome pad printing also came out stunning.

Here's the press blurb:

Spun Out Of Control releases Polish electronic composer Wojciech Golczewski’s complete ‘Dark Souls’ score

In celebration of the first anniversary of the label, Spun Out Of Control announces a cassette release of fast rising Polish composer Wojciech Golczewski’s full and complete score to grisly yet beautiful Norwegian horror movie ‘Dark Souls’. Mirroring this, Golczewski’s soundtrack is a mix of oppressive electronica and beautiful strings that is his most involving and surprising composition yet.

This release of ‘Dark Souls: The Complete Original Motion Picture Soundtrack’ is nearly 60 minutes of music presented on a high quality translucent blue chrome cassette imprinted with silver/chrome graphics, limited to 100 hand-numbered copies worldwide.

A download card for additional access to the complete digital files is included. Specially commissioned cover art and j-card design unique to this release is by Eric Adrian Lee (Death Waltz/ Giallo Disco/ Wil-Ru Records).

About ‘Dark Souls’:

Following releases on Death Waltz, Data Airlines and Lakeshore Records, ‘Dark Souls’ is Wojciech Golczewski’s riveting score to the 2010 Norwegian horror, presented complete and how the composer intended. Fittingly, given the acts committed in the film itself, this is music that bores its way into your skull. So strap on a pair of headphones and prepare to have your brains scrambled, your nerves shattered… but your musical taste buds well and truly satiated.

Pick it up from our Bandcamp or:

Our 2nd tape release in honour of you guys supporting us for the past 12 months is one I'm very excited about... and it's all about the pre-Midi analogue synths.

Michel Duplay - who records as Maine from Paris - is someone I've been listening to for a while and thought really deserving of a physical release. Not a soundtrack per se, but very film score like certainly.

Think a more upbeat version of Air's Virgin Suicides... it certainly sounds very European, but has a lot of heart and warmth to the sound. Think you'll all dig it if you haven't heard his stuff already (know how clued up you all are). ;)

Here's the press blurb for the second tape, which is now up for PRE-ORDER at our Bandcamp. Retail listings to follow, but wanted to keep this one under the radar so it was a surprise for tonight....

Parisian analogue synth obsessive ‘Maine’ is boutique label Spun Out Of Control’s 10th release

Launched to promote emerging electronic musicians and fledgling soundtrack composers, Spun Out Of Control’s 10th release is a tour-de-force of strictly analogue synthesizer music from Montmartre musician Michel Dupay – recording as Maine.

Following a series of digital-only EPs, album ‘IV’ is Maine’s first-ever physical release. Nearly 80 minutes of evocative electronica is presented on a high quality chrome cassette mirroring the j-card’s gold and black artwork. Limited to 100 hand-numbered copies worldwide, design and layout is by Eric Adrian Lee. A download card for additional access to the complete digital files is included.

Maine on his album ‘IV’:

I have always equally loved analogue techniques and synthesized sounds, so with this album I wanted to combine the two techniques to the best of my abilities. ‘IV’ was recorded using no native plug in’s or MIDI, some songs taking months to complete. Each take was played meticulously until everything gelled. Each layer of sound would be tweaked and carefully built to create a new sound. Some synth parts have up to 8 different instruments to create the final sound. My obsession with Joe Meek and Phil Spector is to blame.

I wanted to challenge the listener into questioning if they were listening to vocals, guitar or a synth and created many subtle juxtapositions to solidify that. I used my own voice, violin, viola, bowed piano, bowed guitar, a custom built reverb unit from an old piano soundboard, a Leslie speaker for chorus, an old banking hall for live reverb, absolutely everything was deconstructed, reanalysed, replayed and re-recorded until it was perfect in the moment.

It means mountains to me that you have taken the time to not only read this, but to listen to the music and respond. To connect with one person in the world warrants exactly why I did this album in the first place.

Upon request, we've stuck up a limited gold & white variant of the Maine tape after the first one sold out in just under a week from our Bandcamp.

http://www.spunoutofcontrol.com

Grab this one if you slept on a copy last week (had emails from a few who did...not encouraging double dipping, honest :) )

Michel (Maine) is made up with the response to the first physical release of his music (download included). It's classy stuff.

Last of the first batch also still up at Transmission, Norman & Two Headed Dog.

Thx all.

Congrats, Spun. It's great to see the success your label and it's bevy of musicians are having.

Thanks @mateo... yes it's all been very organic and gradual, we haven't gone all guns blazing on deluxe sets & pricey gimmicks, but (hopefully) affordable packages with some cool artwork and even cooler sounds.

The joy is in turning like-minded folk on to new stuff they haven't heard but might enjoy. Also keeps me out of trouble and channels the music obsession into something productive. :)
