Stranger Things update: I was able to watch episodes 2-4 last night. The 12yo had to bail after episode 2 though due to getting a bit scared too close to bedtime. :) Hoping to finish out season one later tonight.

Also, I might try to get out tomorrow night for one of the last US screenings of the digitally-restored Un Gatto Nel Cervello (Cat in the Brain, Nightmare Concert): http://grindhousereleasing.com/?p=841

I caught a peek of the full-sized theater poster by Grindhouse Releasing and it looked pretty rad. Tried to snag it, but it was already reserved for a theater employee. If anybody finds one for sale, please let me know!

^ only watched that for the first time four months or so ago. Loved it. The effects were really good. Much better than expected.

Last weekend I finally got to see 10 Cloverfield Lane. Really fun movie. And some great suspense. Not sure about the ending though.

And I watched Hardcore Henry. Anyone else seen this? 1st Person action flick. Completely over the top. Credits were mainly Russians and Tim Roth. Reminded me a bit of Crank. That I really loved. Mike Patton's soundtrack I would love on vinyl!

Finished Stranger Things last night with the family. Great show! My initial reaction of an Akira influence was close to the mark, and I enjoyed the story. Very well done, and I look forward to another season.

Bingeing season 6 of Game of Thrones. I'm on episode five. I neither love nor hate this show, but once a year, I manage to find the time to watch 10 hours of it on a random weekend. They've just crowned a new Greyjoy king and I'm halfway home.

@Mateo - It feels a bit strange now that the show has moved beyond the books in some of the story lines. That said, it's still enjoyable to see some of the large plots being revealed, an escalated timeline, and vast movements of forces...

Rented The Mind's Eye on Amazon prime. Yes, it could be a scanners sequel, heads splode. All practical FX which was cool. Bangin Steve Moore soundtrack. not sure I will rewatch or buy tho.

Thanks, Mateo. It was a blast. Scanners was really enjoyable on 35mm, and it all held up pretty damn well. I don't believe I had seen the film in over fifteen years. The make-up effects looked great, and the first exploding head really brought out the applause.

Michael Ironside was just great. He is very down-to-earth and tells his tales pretty straight, but with plenty of cursing and zero bullshit. During a ridiculous story about his press tour to Spain for Scanners, he did mention his younger brother and sister having some kind of ESP, which raised the collective eyebrows of the crowd, but overall he was solid gold. He spoke for almost an hour and took a lot of questions. He ended the night with a great answer to this question:

Q: "You have worked with some big name actors like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Tom Cruise, and Tom Skerrit. Did you like or dislike working with any of those three?"

A: "I don't like to discuss things like that. It's like being a stripper and talking about another stripper. It's all about how good the music is anyway."

He ended the night by saying how fantastic it was to see Scanners projected in a theater with a full crowd, and he had not seen the film in over twenty years. He said watching film as a group is our modern day "communal storytelling by the fireside at night", and stressed how important it was that we continue the tradition of going out and experiencing film together. He had no love for "kids with cell phones" or the futility of watching films on them.

I saw scanners on 35 a few months back at my local alamo, the print was old and scratched and busted as all hell, but it was perfect in every way. for those of us who saw the print of halloween at mondocon last year, it had that similar faded red wash that happens to those older prints. if I was unfamiliar with the film it would have been annoying, but something about the degraded aspect of it really added something to the experience. nothing projects like film.

I own a mint 16mm film print of Scanners. Seeing that scene for the first time on celluloid, and actually handling the print and running through a projector, still gives me goosebumps thinking about it. I love blu ray etc, but having film history (literally) running through your hands is a thrill like no other for me. I also have a faded pan and scan print of Assault on Precinct 13...don't get me started on how cool that fucker is! :D

Ps. if you guys aren't aware, the 3D lenticular postcard from the Forever Midnight store is the best three bucks a man can spend

@Hatter @ScoJo - Excellent, and fully agreed. The aged 35mm print went very well with the film.

One thing I forgot to mention was a comment on the prosthetic effects for the final "showdown" scene. Michael Ironside mentioned that an artist (whose name escapes me at the moment) was brought in that was working on a "bulging veins" effect for Altered States. He said due to the production issues with that film, he was able to break away to Canada and used his technique for the final scene in Scanners.

How cool is it to own your own film print of films like these. How does one acquire stuff like this?
Loved the vinyl score episode with the guys from Forever Midnight. And that postcard will be mine :-)

Mainly collector circles/forums, but 16mm prints pop up on Ebay quite often (and in a wide variety of conditions!)

I have a collection of about 50 feature prints and 100 odd shorts...have taken my foot off that for a while though, haven't been doing a regular screening night for a while. Here's some of our last film screenings (I'm sure you would approve ;)
