if you are remotely a King or Spielberg fan, Stranger Things should hit all the right notes for you. I'm surprised at the amount of reviews that highlight the Spielberg thing more than anything else S.re its got that feel, but the tone is much closer to King's view of childhood combating menace to me. and their are some serious Carpenter shades as well, especially in the score. One effect, although used a lot these days, is right out of ANOES, so craven gets his nod as well. I'd say my mock tagline for it would be "IT meets ET" but that falls short of what a genre fan treat this show is. I especially love the amount of direct call outs to its influences. posters on the wall include The Thing, Jaws, Evil Dead..at one point a character is even watching the defibrillator scene in the Thing, and there is a blatant linger on King's cover photo on the back of the Cujo hardcover at another point.

I love "kids vs the monster" stories, IT, Summer of Night, etc. and I love pay-ops MKULTRA fallout conspiracy stuff as well, so the mix of them just hit all my buttons at once. Haven't loved something this much in a while. I want the score in one way or another ASAP, its really great.

I petitioned my family all weekend to give Stranger Things a try, but was unsuccessful. I will give it another shot this week, but I have found the gods of the remote control to be cruel masters at times.

@Mateo - Speaking of cruelty, the Scanners screening is already sold out. Portland can be a hot ticket on a Saturday night, as we usually only get the "good shows" on the week days between SF and Seattle.

As fate would have it, I am escaping both family and fealty tomorrow night for a 35mm screening of Fulci's and Frizzi's much-renowned gutblaster Zombie/Zombi 2/Zombie Flesh Eaters. If I recall correctly, that film was actually the first synced viewing that this forum participated in. This will be my first time seeing it projected on the big screen, and I couldn't be happier to visit the isle of Matul in the blistering summer heat... as long as the theater has AC.

Yes, a nice finale it was.
Overal a great show. Incredible soundtrack. The one kid did annoy me a lot. But he made up for it.

Well, what can I say. 70 minutes of three really gorgeous women in bikini followed by a bit of a plot in the next 20 minutes :-)
I learned a lot about what 'giallo' can mean. No gloved killer in this one.

And Hot Sensation is on route. I ordered the DVD last weekend from Austria. In the next couple of days I am going to watch some more of the standard giallo to compensate for these type of films. Don't get me wrong, I am happy to have seen this but suspenseful it was not :-) But those girls.... Damn fine!

I have the Camera Obscura DVD (pictured), which is a very lavish package that the film does not quite live up to. It is very weird.

But yes, if you like gorgeous starlets of the period and very little plot/narrative sense, you cannot go wrong.

That said, I just watched 'Kriminal' recently, an early Umberto Lenzi effort, which makes both Top Sensation & Interrabang seem like masterpieces.

That's the one I ordered. However, I ordered the single DVD version. Couldn't find the double DVD version for a normal price.

And by no means I thought Interrabang was a bad movie. It just wasn't as giallo as I wanted it to be.

In my watching 'research' I'm finding a lot of these recommended gialli are surprisingly languid in terms of advancing the plot... it moves at a snail's pace.

Any recommendations for faster paced gialli that grip like a noose...? :)

edit - in the book So Deadly, So Perverse I just read that Frank Wollf who stars in this film died I year later when he committed suicide in a Roman hotel room. He also played in the first giallo from Duccio Tessari (see next post).

Cold Eyes of Fear was not the best giallo I have seen... by a long shot. @Spun: no fast pacing in that one :-)

edit - just finished this. Really good! Very tasteful and mysterious. Suspenseful. Pace is very good. Duccio Tessario makes some great gialli.
One of the actors (Umberto Orsini) also stars in Interrabang. I thought he looked familiar. Senta Berger is absolutely beautiful. Very classy. Anita Strindberg not so much. I liked her in La Coda Della Scorpione, but overall she is too plastic fantastic for my taste.

Anyways, I highly recommend all Duccio Tessari's gialli. They all are scored by GIanni Ferrio. They all are different but great.
