I have a 2 year old I have briefly distracted with youtube, so my list will have to be top 5:

5. NY Ripper -- This was a fucking shocking surprise -- I never expected to love this as much as I do -- I think I've said it before -- I feel like I need to wash off the early 80s Times Square after every listen.

4. Solaris (Cliff Martinez) -- I keep thinking I have enough Cliff Martinez because it all sounds relatively similar -- but I guess I don't -- with the introduction of a turntable at my office, it is pretty awesome to have this playing basically behind my ears while I work -- perfect placement.

3. Day of the Dead -- The difference between the WW release and the original release is astounding -- super awesome packaging and the sound quality of this recording is astounding. This release confirmed that WW is for real and here to stay.

2. A Field in England -- I finally got around to really listening to this, in earnest, this morning -- I think it is a work of art -- I just wish they pressed more copies so more people could have it -- This score makes my vision a bit blurry and tracers seem to fade in and out as I move my head from side to side.

1. The Fog -- I firmly believe that this reissue both confirmed that DW is the Martin Scorsese of soundtrack labels and that The Fog is timeless. There is no question that this is the best sounding and best packaged release of 2013. I had collected all three variants (black, haze, splatter) but found myself, when having dinner with a friend last week, compelled to give away one of my pressings -- it can't just sit on a shelf -- it calls to be -- must be enjoyed. This (as well as Day of the Dead I should add) release is the epitome of by fans for fans - nothing but love here.


Lastly, the biggest turd of the year -- There is no doubt that Mondo's Halloween is the biggest turd of the year. I frankly don't see myself ever listening to it again. I feel like it was ripped direct from the 1998 20th anniversary cd -- dialogue and all -- I wasn't too angry about it, until I gave it a listen after niemand630's review -- he's absolutely right -- total garbage. It is pretty funny because if you read some of the reviews of the 20th anniversary cd, the complaints are the same. Ok, now I will stop complaining about Halloween.

I think you guys have captured most of my faves on this thread, but I don't think I've seen Mike Ratledge's Riddles of the Sphinx which would definitely be on my top ten.

I'd also mention some of the 7" releases on Finders Keepers - especially Komeda's tunes from Knife In The Water.

I left a box set off my list that I didn't own until last night, but now that I do...it has to go on my top of the year list in whatever category you want to place it in. Numero Group's Purple Snow box set is incredible, and absolutely deserves to be voted best box set of the year!

Not sure about a top ten, but I can definitely say the number one was The Fog on Death Waltz. I own the haze and gold versions, and both are top notch. It's the coolest record packaging I've ever seen. I'm glad Spencer was able to do a repress because this needs to be out there!

I do think it's telling that really no one is listing Mondo's Halloween as a favorite. I agree, I wouldn't be surprised at all if we found they ripped it from the CD. I would prefer to have had no dialog. I like the artwork, and I have all three editions, but I'll probably sell one or two, it's not that great that I need to have all the versions.

Agreed with the dialogue on Halloween...it was cool...once - Why didn't they do it like "The Fog" with the 2 lps...one original OST and the other with the cues - I do like the artwork...the house as the lips works really well...and the H35 variant packaging is really nice too

My Top Ten 2013

10 - Halloween (Mondo)
I know it's received some flack on here for basically just being a vinyl press of the CD but as I've not owned a copy of the soundtrack on vinyl up until now it's made it into my top ten. The artwork is also pretty killer.

09 - Fearless Vampire Killers (Bronzerat)
Little to say really, just a fantastic soundtrack with some fantastic artwork. The bonus cd is a nice touch too.

08 - Evil Dead (Death Waltz)
Atmospheric at its ultimate. Listened more than once and had to check the doors to make sure the deadites weren't on their way. Ace package all round.

07 - Solaris (Mirumir)
Since picking this up in the summer it's rarely far away from my turntable. I could bang on and on about this but hearing is believing.

06 - New York Ripper (Death Waltz)
Ashamed to say I'd never seen the film before I'd picked up the soundtrack but as blind buy's go this has to up there with the very best. On almost constant rotation, disco, funk, soul at its groove shaking finest.

05 - Assault on Precinct 13 (Death Waltz)
I can remember my uncle playing this back when I was a kid & growing up with the film I knew this would be an essential purchase. To say it met my expectations would be a massive understatement. The packaging & pressing is hands down one of if not the finest I've ever seen in my 30 years of collecting.

04 Only God Forgives (Milan)
One of Martinz' finest scores to date. The stand out track 'Wanna Fight' has probably been played in my house almost daily since picking this up. I'd recommend picking up the single of said track too.

03 Room 237 (Death Waltz)
Very little to say about this score other than it's outstanding. After seeing the film & hearing that DW were releasing I literally counted the days. One of the best modern scores in my opinion.

02 The Fog (Death Waltz)
Nothing I can say will do The Fog justice. All I can say is, I loved it so much I bought it twice.

Couldn't choose between these two so for my top soundtracks of 2013 are...

01 Rockey's Style (Trunk)/Maniac (Death Waltz)
Maniac had pretty much become my favourite album of the year from the 2nd listen. The packaging and presentation from DW is genius, far superior to Mondo in my opinion. Some simple but moving synth with minimal instrumentaion has created a soundtrack that will take some beating in the years to come.

Rockey's Style is odd. Literally. The back story on Rockey Palmer is bizarre to say the least but one worth reading up on. The album itself is a mix of funk/easy listening/disco and everything else in between. Has been played at least once a day since picking it up. Everyone should pick this up and take a step into Rockey's world.

3. Steve Jablonsky - Ender's Game (Varese Sarabande)

Still tempted to buy Stoker and Only God Forgives though.

longtime lurker, first time poster. Picked up the Rockey's Style soundtrack today after seeing all the recommendations here. WOW, OUTSTANDING!!!!! Thanks dudes for bringing it to my attention.
