I don't think I'm wrong about the sample song up being boring for the Forbidden World soundtrack, but with that said - I will definitely take your word on the rest of it being good, and will pick it up of course in order to give a full listen. I did listen to the sample song a couple of times, and just couldn't find anything worthwhile to it at all though.

I received my Room 237 and NY Ripper today. The packaging on them is really great, I love how heavy & thick the jackets are.

OH! And after listening -

I know I'm probably going to be yelled at from one end of the forum to the other because it seems like everyone loves it, but I found the music for Room 237 to be pretty boring on vinyl. It was fitting for the documentary, and sounds good stylistically...but there just isn't any actual substance, to me at least. It just sounds like guys playing around in a studio room with a bunch of vintage synths for a day. With that said...I will definitely give the CD a chance, perhaps the extra music on there will jump out to me.

Now with NY Ripper - that soundtrack is great! I love the music on it. It is something different, refreshing, and fun. It reminds me of the original Maniac soundtrack at times. I really am enjoying it, so a big thank you to Spencer for getting this one out!

I have to say that this horror/vinyl thing has gotten way out of control. "I'm upset I bought an (x) amount of copies and none of them were orange." Rosemary's Baby is my favorite film and the score sounds like Broadcast, but I can't bring myself to preorder it. There's way more interesting music out there. "These will be gone my Christmas." How else can you tell me to fuck off? I can't afford it until after. I don't want colored vinyl, I want it to sound good. You're encapsulating something very important and I feel ashamed I can't pay money for it, even though it doesn't exist. And Mondo-- good god. I've got shit-splattered vinyl for ya.

Well you can pick up a used copy of Rosemary's Baby pretty cheap on TER so do that and don't worry about coloured reissues.
I agree that the market is now pretty flooded so you can pick and choose what to buy .
We're definitely going to be releasing more stuff that has never seen the light of day next year (our Giallo issues for instance) . I'd be more than happy to do a small run of every release on black vinyl.
Maybe we should start a back to black record sub I'd did toy with the idea of offering a run that would cost £23 and you'd get coloured and black so one two look at and one to play I just wasn't sure people would be into it ....

I truly love that score which is why I released it , it totally has it's roots in the 70s but still has it's own personality.
As a label I'm not interested in JUST reissuing easy wins if I always wanted to release contemporary scores that I thought deserved to be heard yes it's a risk but artistically I'd feel pretty hollow say just reissuing every Elm Street release.
Sounds poncy but music should be about discovery and while you don't like say Room you may love Devils Business.
The label has to be about all things I love .
I just hope others do too.
This vinyl horror soundtrack boom is a fad and a crowded market means implosion (sooner rather than later) the labels that will come out of it on the other side are those that innovate and push both themselves and their audience.
I LOVE that you guys take a chance on things I release because you trust me .. That's incredible to me me and very humbling and heartwarming.
We are going deep into Italian territory next year and have some incredibly beautiful and influential releases coming up at least two of which I think are in the top ten scores of all time !
Hope you revisit room and find something you like.

I had mentioned before maybe having another level of "sub" but not so special - Along with the Original sub...180g special color vinyl...I personally like the color(s) matching the sleeve...and gifts/bonuses/freebies and heads up for non-sub releases...you could offer a less expensive very basic sub and a black vinyl sub...

The Back to Black / Audiophile sub - 180g black vinyl...with gifts/bonuses/freebies and heads up for non-sub releases

The Distributed / General Release basic...and less expensive...sub - Lets say you decide that the distributed / general release color will always be the same...maybe...god forbid...140g transparent red (my personal least favorite color)...no posters / prints...no freebies...6 release mailed from distributor(LITA in the States...and others round the world) to your home...this adding the peace of mind that you don't have to wait around the computer when they go up for sale

Then in the long run there would eventually only be three colorways out there for each release...Full sub with ginchy neato color...and again I vote for matchy matchy - Back to Black sub with black - Distributed / General release sub that will always and forever be the same color

Have to agree with @ghostfires on R237. Sorry to be negative, but....

Since I enjoyed the doc up to a point (felt too long, and was definitely a killer dvd extra rather than a cinema experience for me), and the music worked well for the film, I was definitely up for giving it a try - but listening to the samples it just didn't work as stand-alone music for me. Very by-the-numbers retro and derivative sorry. And the sleeve art was terrible (again sorry! Sam Smith is really hit-and-miss for me....his art for the DW Prince of Darkness really put me off that release too - considering what an awesome film/score that is, it missed the mark completely! Love a lot of his Criterion work tho....). The art cinched it for me. A shame, cuz I'm very happy double-dipping on DW re-issues that I have original release of (ie POD) but they have to offer me something different that I really dig - mainly the additional music (ie The Fog) but crucially the new art. That all gets factored in when I have limited funds for my OST habit

Spencer, I hear what you're saying r.e: the flooded market. I wanted to bring this up for a while. It seems to me that the soundtrack reissues market is way out of control now, I'd hazard a guess that it'll all be over by this time next year. Only one or two labels will come out on top - and of course, I think DW will be standing above the rest. I think the key is to keep releasing unusual stuff, things that either haven't been issued on vinyl before or bring something new to the table. Just reissuing stuff that's still readily available in their original format is just plain lazy. Also the interaction with your buyers is really important - the labels that treat people the best will survive, the ones who don't give a fuck deserve to go under.
So anyway, my question is this: does the over-saturation of the market worry you? Are you concerned about the 'bubble bursting' at some point?

What's with people hating on Forbidden World?? I've loved that movie since I was a kid and when the theme starts playing during the sex scene I get so pumped! I still blast the record all the time.

As for gialli - by far my favorite genre (besides classic universal and hammer) from growing up to present day. I love how twitter people get all excited thinking you'll release Suspria, or Deep Red, or whatever Goblin LP that has 10 different versions or releases. The amazing films that have never seen an official vinyl release like The Case of the Bloody Iris, The Case of the Scorpion's Tail, Your vice is a locked room and only i have the key, Twitch Of The Death Nerve is what get's me overly excited! The list goes on as I stare at my movie collection.

Also, kudos to you Spencer. It is really all about releasing stuff that you like or are influenced by. It's such a great feeling to introduce people to these films and scores for the first time and have them fall in love with them. I for one have never been about the easy cash grab when it comes to releasing anything artistic, so I have a great deal of respect for you.

I do enjoy engaging in discussion instead of people just yelling about how you don't know anything if you don't like this soundtrack or that movie. I like hearing why people think something is so good so that the next time I decide to take it in, I can look at it from a different aspect.

I also think I'm getting tired of the music from some of these soundtracks because of the flooded market. Not just of soundtracks - but synth exploration records, and horror-emulation electronica. For example: everyone is saying the newest Umberto record is incredible...no it's not, and you'll eventually see that when you get a few years away from it. You'll go back and listen to his first two albums and then compare it to the newest, and think...what the hell? I think there is just too much of the soundtrack market going on mixed with guys like Steve Moore, Umberto, Xander Harris, etc trying to emulate the living hell out of those sounds at the same time. It's just all becoming boring. I think that is why the Red Riding soundtrack was so refreshing to me...it just offered a different take on horror music. Plus - goddamn am I sick of people saying this music or that music sounds just like John Carpenter. No it doesn't! John Carpenter sounds like John Carpenter. His simplicity in score writing was brilliant because of the style mixed with the emotion...but these albums coming out with minimal synth/horror explorations are SO boring and lack any kind of emotion or fresh style (Steve Moore included with his latest record unfortunately). To sum all that up...everyone is putting out the exact same shit in different packages these days!

I am very interested in what Spencer has ready for 2014. I definitely like the idea of giallo. Italian synth scores would be great...something gritty and different. They had cheaper synths back then, and those recorded to analog tape just sounds incredible....so I'm definitely ready for that.

Any kind of special packaging and colored vinyl is fun...I don't see any reason to ever stop all that. I get the higher quality of black vinyl reasoning, but not all of us have $5,000 stereo systems...so colored vinyl sounds just fine to us lesser beings. Plus it's fun! I like the whole package of the new art with the matching colors. I buy all my vinyl for the music, and if I don't like it...I sell it, but that doesn't mean we can't enjoy the variations and such. As for doubling up with black and colored - I personally can't really afford to do much doubling up any more, I need to start selling some of my variants any ways. I do think, however, that you have a good idea of the double deal Spencer with black and colored. That is a cool idea, and for really important records - I'd probably buy into that (though the most important ones to me you've already put out!). I truly want to see more in-depth releases like The Fog. I'm so willing to pay more money for something that has true merit, like the unearthed extra recordings and all the information. I would easily say that The Fog Death Waltz release isn't just one of the best reissues ever, but one of the absolute best pieces of vinyl in my entire collection. You just got everything perfectly right with it.

How about a Tangerine Dream vinyl soundtrack box set? I'm still holding out for that! It seems like they've been totally ignored with all these reissues. Could be issues with the rights to their music, who knows. I certainly would dig into that though, especially if The Keep magically appeared on vinyl!

Maybe I'm missing out on others, but I'm really only aware of the main labels which are represented here: Death Waltz, Mondo, Waxworks, and One Way Static. Death Waltz and Mondo aren't going anywhere. Mondo is the most mainstream of them all and obviously has a huge following. Death Waltz has really emerged as the front runner in the pack (I don't think I'm saying that just because they're my favorite either). They are continuously stepping up quality and are blowing me away with each release. Waxworks is new, but so far, I'm impressed and I don't think they're going anywhere based on the buzz I see their releases getting. One Way Static is cool, and their first release was of good quality. They're obviously a little more underground right now, and that may change with some more mainstream releases under their belt. I'm sure there are some others that I'm not aware of, but those four companies look to be going strong or are starting out that way, and I don't see them going away unless they want to. I do see the bubble that we're talking about, and really, I think some of these labels need to get off the hype of limited releases or variants, as I think that's where the danger is.

As far as versions of releases, I like where Spencer is going with all represses being done on clear vinyl. I think that's a cool idea. As far as other colors go, just leave it up to him. I would like the subs to remain special, and maybe just a solid color for general sale? Black vinyl is cool and I'm sure there are those who want it, but as soon as it's dubbed limited in any way, it will sell out fast and be sold for twice the price on eBay just because it's limited. I wouldn't want to see that happen. I don't see how bundling a color and black pressing together would make sense, cost wise or just because people whine about quality. A black sub is a good idea, as the initial cost of the sub seems to put off flippers, so the people who really want it could get it.

Ever since I discovered the Escape From New York pressing in Oct 2012, I've been obsessed and hooked on Death Waltz. Aside from the Halloween flexi, I own at least one copy of everything. From what Spencer has been hinting at, it's only going to get better next year.
