I’m curious what people’s thoughts are on the upcoming WW release of Texas Chain Saw Massacre?

Beyond releasing a daft overpriced single track 7” teaser that nobody needs, both the sample track and WWs classically vague/ambiguous wording lead me to deduce it’s audio pulled from the music/fx track of a print. I’m not necessarily averse to that, with such a sought after legacy horror release we all probably agree we’ll take ‘something’ over ‘nothing’, but why not be straight up and clear about it (like the DW 40th anniversary Halloween release for instance).

Thoughts?

Since it was announced I assumed that is all they were doing. Hasn't it been stated multiple times over the last two decades that the original elements are lost? You would think if they were some how miraculously found it would be THE thing you would be marketing about this release

In WW's email it says.

"Remastered from the original raw analog recordings by Wayne Bell at Soundcrafter Studio in Austin, TX, the score will finally make its way to vinyl, digital, CD, and cassette in celebration of the iconic film’s 50th Anniversary."

We know WW can be liberal with the truth, but they make it sound like it came from original tapes. Who knows.

Yeah I saw that @static and would draw the same conclusion. If true, it does make the inclusion of sound effects throughout the released ‘Main Title’ track a somewhat confusing choice?

Or is it the only way to make it make sense as a release to include sfx (and maybe even dialogue, who knows?) since it’s famously not a typical ‘score’ in the traditional sense?

"raw analog recordings" is a weirdly broad/indirect term, if it was the original masters why not just say that?

I’ve compared the WW ‘Main Title’ to the opening of the film itself, and I’m not 100% (for a few reasons) but fairly convinced it’s some kind of re-recording. In a recent interview with Bell he talks about how easy the score was to record and says he can ‘recreate the sounds right now’ in his work space. Dunno - but the released ‘Main Title’ is certainly different enough when A/B compared.
‘Raw analog recordings’ could just simply mean that Bell used the same vintage recording methods as the original.

I love Humphreys but man, there are some things that just don’t need his ‘supercolourful’ style. What about Phantasm screams ‘bright primary colours’? I honestly just don’t understand these folks.

Definitely excited for unearthed new music as a huge fan, but who needs ANOTHER repress of the og album?! They coulda omitted that and kept it as an affordable 2xlp….

Quick question. How the F does WRWTFWW still have copies of They Live in stock?

I'm guessing cost. You're looking at $65+ for a double LP. That is what has held me off. I keep looking at it but I just can't pull the trigger for it. I know I'm probably missing some good stuff but I'm pretty happy with the original release.

That makes sense. But with so few copies I'm still surprised they haven't sold out. Also it sounds fantastic. :)

like tim said I would assume it's a combination of cost, lots of people who already have 2-3 other copies and WRWTFWW did very little promo for it, feel like it really flew under the radar

Well, it seems like it was primarily pressed for Howarth to sell at shows, and it’s quite possibly a kinda boot which might explain them not shouting about it too much! Honestly, it’s an extremely bare bones album- doesn’t even have anything on the white labels to indicate the four sides. I identified them myself and added colour coded stickers, to cross ref with an a4 printed tracklisting sheet that I put together.

Having said all that, agree with @static that it sounds great, and it’s a treat to have the expanded cd set- there were some cool tracks onmitted from the previous single LP vinyl releases.
