I come to giallo for the mood, the music, and the effort put into the titles. even the GOOD giallo are rarely actually good movies but man can they be a hoot to watch.

I will say that even though this statement is correct the bad ones can be truly awful in the most boring ways.

ImageChristopher Young - 50 States of Fright: The Golden Arm (Michigan) OST [Notefornote Music NFN9045LP

Theme track for this is heavy with some metal guitar riffs. The score has some nice tension and dark moods mixed with lighter piano pieces. Mr. Young still has the magic touch.

Ordered back in 2021 I had forgotten all about this one. When I got a shipping notice from NoteForNote I had to go back and check my emails to see what they were shipping to me. Haven't gotten around to spinning it yet.

Same here, two years is probably the longest wait and I had totally forgotten. Also, I had moved house and forgot to update this order! Thankfully, USPS forwarded the delivery.

This one did but come cheap. Even the "cheap" variant was pricey, so why not go for this insane looking one?

Anyway, this score rips! I can't recommend it enough. Definitely not one to sleep one.

So I have been absolutely rinsing this- total surprise/gift, best thing Ive heard in ages! And this morning I finally got round to checking who it’s by- Isao Tomita. ‘Wait, is that… THE Tomita?!’ thinks me. Of course it is.

Which is wild, since my early youth getting into electronic music (particularly TD) I had always dismissed Tomita as ‘not quite my cuppa green tea’ finding what I’d heard to be too polite and noodly and new agey? I dunno, something went wrong with my first impression. So consequently I have never questioned this prejudice nor listened to an album. So, like, is this heady orchestral funk electro on Catastrophe 1999 something he did much of??! Do I need schooling? Are there must-hear records by him, regardless of style, that someone can point me too?

Tomita! Who’d a funk it!?

@ScoJo - Tomita's solo albums are indeed the more spaced-out noodly variety (or "ambient/modern classical" right? lol), but there might be some orchestral scoring duties for stuff closer to what was found on Catastrophe 1999. He scored the tokusatsu TV show キャプテンウルトラ (Captain Ultra) back in 1967 which may be close, but perhaps still not that full-on prog rock sound with trap set and electric guitar. It is fascinating to follow Japanese composers through the late 60's/early 70's as they worked with orchestras and incorporated prog/fuzz/jazzfunk into their sound and produced some top-shelf original scores, but some of them seem to be one-offs or departures of just a few years. There may also be more anime/OVA from the late 1960's/early 70's that he wrote in that style, but that is a difficult and deep rabbit hole to dredge. I just don't think we would find it on his solo albums where it's just Tomita-san with his spaceship o' synths.

Amazing, thanks @deaf. I’m happy to do a sensible amount of youtube surfin’ for more of this sauce, but in many ways I’m actually happy to hear I was basically not way-off with my juvenile assessment - like, there are not 17x solo lps full of straight fire orch-jazz-funk that I’m gonna be needing STAT! :)

Catastrophe really is something - Bond-mode Barry meets Vannier and William Sheller, my god. This particular iteration of the already-incredible main theme had me lifting out of my seat!
