Did you watch The Dentist for you 96 watch? It’s not the best movie in the world but it does have that Brian Yuzna feel to it.

A movie that also fits that Scream, Urban Legend, IKWYDLS model of 90s teen slasher and at the time I thought was terrible but looking back 20+ years and the addition of other shitty sequels is H2O. I think H2O kinda aged well considering.

I don’t know for sure and I should just go check but aren’t all of these movies written or produced by Kevin Williamson? I’m probably wrong but he definitely seems like the King of 90s teen slashers.
I had The Dentist on my long list :-) But now you mention it I will give a try today.
H2O I wanted to watch for sure. I think I have only seen that once.
Kevin Williamson also wrote the screenplay for The Faculty and than one is also on my list.

It appears as I get closer to 2000s I have already seen most movies at least once and for 1997 and 1998 there are a lot of movies that have some interest. But I don't want to spend more than 1 week on a year and I don't have the same amount of time each week. Oh well, I am not to strict about this all in the end.
I am going to watch the Japanese 1997 movie Cure as well. It is a thriller and not horror and I think I did watch it back then. But Cube I am skipping because I have seen that many times. Same as with The Devil's Advocate. That feels more like a thriller but also a movie I watched several times. I actually might try Night of the Demons 3... Although I probably shouldn't.
Cure is incredible - Kiyoshi Kurosawa (Pulse, Sweet Home) whom I became a bit obsessed with last year after discovering Creepy. The great thing is, I've not watched a film of his that I didn't really enjoy, and he has made lots which I've yet to see! Enjoy Cure anyway, it's a real treat :)

@ScoJo I did not realize he made Creepy. I loved that one after seeing it because you played in your 100 days of series.
I will look for his other movies as well.

Haha I’m glad you liked it. I know there is a sequel but I still haven’t watched it so I couldn’t comment either way if it’s worth the watch or not.

I started watching this last night before bed and was really sad that I had to shut it off as I was getting really tired and nodding off. The film is fantastic so far and I can't wait to finish it tonight.

Bez you have blasted thru these films. What was your opinion on Village of the dammed. I think I have seen it twice in the 90s. It felt like a very g rated movie. Even the score did not make an impression on me at the time. Only recently hearing the soundtrack again...it has grown on me. I wonder if my feelings on the film would warm up a bit seeing it now.

Both Dusk till dawn and Bordello of blood were filmed so close together. If I can remember Bordello was first. I was working at those two different studios at the same time for a few months. Moonlighting at masters at night. Kind of a nightmare to do, that I never did again. The word from the effects crew was Dennis Miller was not a nice guy to the crew..and I am using nice words here.

I hated working on Spawn. I Had bleeding ulcers during that and was pissing and shitting blood for two weeks. Shingles, ulcers, anxiety attacks some of the benefits of competing at an adult level since childhood.

Your Scream post triggered a Drew Barrymore memory. I did not work on Scream but was at the studio when it was being made. Drew Barrymore came in to have her head cast for the hanging death scene. It was scheduled on a weekend so the effects crew were gone and just the owner doing the cast. I was at the other end of this enormous warehouse sculpting on the jingle all the way turbo man suit. I remember an oasis song came on the radio i was listening to and drew yelled across the room can you please turn that up. She eventually was curious and walked over and watched me working for a little bit and gave me that enormous, friendly smile. I was so damn shy back then I did not even say hello I just smiled back. The strange aiplane hanger emptiness of the place and seeing her not in a set like environment made it more memorable for some reason.

That Drew Barrymore story made me smile. Lovely story!
I really liked Village of the Damned. I was expecting something really bad (not sure why) but I did enjoy it from beginning to end.
The Bordello of Blood docu I linked to is a lot of fun. Not only the crew but apparently everyone hated Dennis Miller :-) In that docu there were explaining that they were filming in August in Canada. That has to be 1995 because it was release in August 1996. They were shooting a lot in this huge glass building/church and forgot that in August in Canada there are only a couple of hours of actual darkness. And the whole climax of that movie I set a night in that glass church. Very funny documentary.

From Dusk till Dawn still is a lot of fun.

Not really sure if I am going to watch Spawn. 1997 has a lot of other titles I need/want to get through.

Scream I think is fantastic. Scream 2 was okay. But I loved stuff like how a character was mentioning in part 1 that they did not want Tori Spelling playing them in a movie. In Scream 2 Tori Spelling is actually playing her in Stab (the movie within the movie). But also all the horror movie reference are a horror geeks dream.

All in all I have seen some excellent 1990's flicks these past weeks. Mimic (Directors Cut) was fantastic. I was sure I had seen it before but couldn't remember anything. So I probably hadn't seen it and got it mixed with Species.... Guillermo Del Toro made some terrific films. Cronos was brilliant. I have not yet seen The Devil's Backbone but definitely will. I did not release he made Blade 2. Can't remember that movie.
The Dentist was the movie I had the most physical reaction to :-) Fuck me. Those close ups of mouths and teeth and the sound of the drill...

@evan thanks so much for sharing that. Such cool little insights and I love that Drew Berrymore story.

@bez glad you enjoyed Mimic, it was a film that I enjoyed on initial release (I think I saw it in the theater) back before I knew who Del Toro was but when I revisited the film in the DC form I really loved it. You really need to watch The Devil's Backbone, it's my favorite Del Toro film. It's so sad and beautiful.

I couldn't do The Dentist, I tried but that night I wasn't feeling it. I'll give it another try one of these nights.

I hope Species 2 is on your list of films for '98. I love that film. One I skipped back in the way because I thought it was stupid to make a second one, my terrible choice was remedied many years later and it's one of my favorite late 90's films.

Good news indeed! Contraband is really solid, at least from what I remember - used to have it on VHS and don‘t think I have watched it since…

Cauldron Films is a relatively new label, but they seem to have a good reputation in the boutique blu-ray community.
I have one release from them (Beyond Terror) and it's great.

I listened to an interview with Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe and he said that Hildur Guðnadóttir composed much of the score before shooting. The crew would listen while filming to help get into the mood. I love this movie.
