Haha.
I don’t I have seen Blair Witch 2… and reading up on it now and I see there is also a Blair Witch 3 titled Blair Witch being a sequel to Blair Witch…
I know those are not going to be good. But are they good enough in the sense that a lot of 80s horror is good enough?
Blair Witch 2 Book of Shadows is a very famous disaster. Check out the IMDB/Rotten Tomtoes ratings ;) It was filmed in some weird way on digital video in a studio, like an MTV music video. It has it fans though! I've never seen it. Never will.

I made it about thirty minutes into Wingard's reboot Blair Witch. Found it mind numbing, insufferable characters. Boring. In fact, not a fan of that guys' work at all, wildly overrated basic-bitch fan service horror crap.

Well then I am not going to bother with it. Too many other crap still to watch :-)

I generally don't feel like someone should deny themselves their own experience of a movie, but frankly Bez - good call. The original film is soooo incredible and all these films will do retrospectively is leave a shitty 'cash in' taste in your mouth, I'm fairly confident.

Now - go watch Sole Survivor or Midnight or Dark August or Something Wicked This Way Comes! Perfect films for the season :)

Maybe next week… I am sitting in the sun at the moment. Clear blue sky and 18 degrees. So no October in sight at the moment.

I had the thought today of starting a streak of horror movies starting in 1990 and then one movie for each year up to 2021. I believe I have seen most 90s horror flicks but I forgot about the era a bit. Of course with good reason but still there was some enjoyable stuff. And one movie a year should not be too much of a problem.

Blair Witch 2 is awful, I would love to see the directors cut that supposedly exists in archives somewhere. A lot of people love Blair Witch 2, I think your mileage will vary depending on how much you enjoy late 90's/early 00's horror movies. It falls very much in line with stuff from that era.

I honestly don't dislike windgards blair with movie in the least, its not great but i think its watchable at least, and the score is pretty good. I like both You're Next and The Guest a whole lot as far as his other movies go. I have a friend who loves Blair Witch 2, but i try not to hold it against him. that movie is a ROUGH watch but it is an incredible snapshot of a very specific time i guess.

Bunch of stuff this weekend...

Midnight Mass Dir by Mike Flanagan

As many of you know I'm not on the Flanagan hype train, I enjoyed Hush, Occulus & Ouija Orgin of Evil but not films I plan to revisit. Since he kind of became the big name in horror I've been left cold by most of his stuff. Hill House did nothing for me and Doctor Sleep was meh for me. Well I'm here to say this impressed me. Is it groundbreaking? No. He managed to finally create some interesting characters that I was actually interested in seeing what happened to them. The show is too long and very long winded, long (very long) monologues that can grow tiresome but if you take the show one episode at a time and don't binge it I think it will benefit you. It's still very Flanagan but I think this is him working where he should rather than adaptions. Definitely worth watching.

V/H/S 94 Dir by Timo Tjahjanto, Ryan Prows, Chloe Okuno, Simon Barrett & Jennifer Reeder

I had a blast watching this. Like all anthologies there are weak and strong stories. There are 4 segments plus a wraparound, the only one I disliked was the wraparound (it sucked) but the 4 segments were all good and two of them were really great. This one felt much more playful that previous entries, they had a lot more fun with the segments. Timo Tjahjanto segment was fucking crazy and insanely fun, it's worth watching for this one alone. Ryan Prows segment was also impressive take on a normal trope we just don't see. This is on Shudder, if you like the previous ones or just anthologies in general give this a watch.

Til Death Dir by Scott Dale

This film could have been a lot better if some one was smart enough to cut out the first 30 minutes (or at least trimmed it down to 5-10 minutes). Once the main event happens that sets off the rest of the film it's an interesting concept. Wife is unhappy, cheating on husband. Husband takes her to cabin they once visited to rekindle their relationship. After first night she wakes up handcuffed to her husband who mutters something and blows his brains out. She's now handcuffed to a dead body, he has removed all sharp objects from the house, destroyed all forms of communication and hired a person who attacked her years ago to come kill her. A weird cat and mouse game. I think it could have been a much better film if directed by someone else.

The Night House Dir by David Bruckner

I really enjoyed this one. Recbecca Hall is fantastic. The atmosphere is really good. I knew nothing going in and think that's probably a good way to see it so I won't be discussing the plot. They created some nice mythology for the film and stuff that's never fully given to you so you have to put stuff together yourself and make your own theories on some of it. Visually it's quite good too, some really nice cinematography. Definitely worth checking out.

@inskb
Thanks for your reviews. I watched Till Death a while ago and agree totally with what you said.

Wanted to watch The Night House last Friday together with my girlfriend but she didn't feel to well and went to bed early. We will watch it hopefully this week.

I only remember every having seen the first VHS or was it REC? I think I might have those the other way around in my head...

VHS films are anthologies. REC are zombie films (REC 1 & 2 are quite good imo). Both use found footage as their gimmick so I could see the confusion in memories over time.

And it is fantastic.
I had no idea. This is the director's cut released in 2016. I really loved everything about it. A shame they called it Exorcist III in the first place because I can imagine that would stop a lot of people from watching it.

So I wanted to start my new horror quest today. (At least) one movie from each year starting in 1990 up to now in chronological order. Preferably ones that I have not yet seen before.
I am going to watch other movies in between so I am not really sure how this quest will evolve. I have seen so many 70s and 80s horror in the last couple of years and the ones from the 90s and 00s I have mostly seen back then. But a lot of them I also have missed.

I started today with Final Exam... I turned that off pretty quickly. So happy I did because of Exorcist III!
I also have some other stuff from 1990 that I might end up watching but not sure yet. Lucio Fulci's Demonia and Cat in the Brain for instance... And I will finally watch Jacob's Ladder! Only after I have seen that one I will visit 1991.
Probably start that year with Body Parts. I think I rented that one on VHS in the middle of the 90s and have never seen that one since.
Looking at other 90s movies I did find some great stuff I have never seen before or has been ages. And after watching the first couple of minutes of Final Exam I don't think I am going to spend a lot of time trying to add the really crappy titles. Although I was thinking of watching Joe D'Amato's Deep Blood a.ka. Sharks and Sangue negli abissi but Wikipedia says it is from 1989 and iMDB 1990...

That's a fun idea @bez. I'm looking forward to seeing what you choose from each year. I actually kind of liked Final Exam. It's a very slow start and ultimately doesn't live up to it's own expectations but I found it more entertaining than I had anticipated. I won't defend it though, it's a bad movie.

I would like to recommend a film for 1993, maybe not your first choice and it may be something to just squeeze into the free time but I think it's often overlooked.
Brian Yuzna's Necronomicon. It's an anthology film of Lovecraft stories with some incredible practical effects and a crazy Jeffrey Combs as Lovecraft himself. It's far from perfect but one I think just gets overlooked due to the era.

This beauty arrived today. I was very surprised to see it came in a hardbox and not a slipcase.

@Inksb: Yeah, I also got that and H1 this week. I really like the packaging. New artwork of H1 is debatable, I think it's ok but did of course change to original art for the case. Have H2 on order as well but will not get any of the others. Took a quick look at the transfer, looking good imo.

I have the 4K they released a year or so ago of the first Halloween so I wasn't too concerned with picking up this new edition. Once there's some comparisons on the transfer I'll see if I need to upgrade. Honestly I've probably bought Halloween too many times over the years to begin with, I need to learn to skip some of them haha.

Look at Mr Money Bags over here buying all three Sacred Bones editions! Seriously those were way too expensive for me. Even if I did consider buying 3 briefly :)
I ventured over to bluray.com forums to see what people were thinking of the transfers. Not too much discussion as it seems a lot of people haven't received theirs yet. H3 seems positive, H1 both positive and compression complaints. But the sample size is too small, it was 3 people that talked about their copies so we'll have to wait and see.

I can't criticize, I spent $45 a piece on Riki-O and Robotrix bluray's from 88 Films. Just because I wanted the nice Limited Editions with hard box case. If I waited 3 months I could get them for $25-$30 in standard editions.
