@crossedpete, Mizell bros. Work with Bobbi Humphrey is also well worth checking out. I've picked up her album Satin Doll twice now, and still can't believe I don't have a copy of her album Blacks and Blues 🤦(both involving mizell bros.)

Just ordered an og blacks and blues

I've posted it before but this one is such a grower. Reginald Workman is so versatile in the title track bouncing back and forth between laying down a funky groove and the delicate bowed sections counterbalanced by the splashy cymbals. And grant & hancock pull the whole thing together.

Higgins + workman + Hancock really gel here and Herbie seems to take the searching theme to heart with some explorative ideas to play against the overall theme

I also love the way the cropped cover changed the feel of the photo. Here's the original to compare.

Great minds think a like, a local record store had a copy of blacks and blues for months. Yesterday I went to finally pick it up and sadly it was gone. I might just have to buy the reissue now.

The other two Mizell bros. Albums I’m on the hunt for are Johnny Hammond- Gamblers life and Byrds stepping into tomorrow

I see that Herbie Mann album everywhere yet I haven’t pulled the trigger on buying yet.

I picked up this gem today among others. Sounds great.

Join us for some jazz spins :-)

I cant remember who hipped me to this Kofi reissue back in 2013. I'm glad they did. Hard to believe the label passed on releasing this for 25 years. I had to double check the session dates, 1969-1970. It's mighty funky. This pressing is awesome too. Heavy, flat, dead quiet, very dynamic mastering. I highly recommend it. I believe there was a UK/US pressing in 95 and then this 2013 remaster, and that's it.

Went to a record fair today. I looked in all the jazz boxes and didn't even pull out a single record to look at... Until the last table I saw. A guy that's normally there with 45s came with a box full of jazz heat he got from "a guy that brings me stuff"

Lots of 2nd/3rd press blue notes, a few originals. I didn't get there early enough and missed out on some diamonds (OG newks time!) but still walked away with about 30 great records for about $25/each.

This was the highlight, a 2nd press mono with taped edges and a badly marked disc. But none of the marks were feelable, and it sounded great on a little suitcase player. I'm glad other folks left this on account of the condition because it plays really well. And the Night in Tunisia cut smokes

Damn I really wish I had gotten there at 8 for early bird. This box was out for 2 1/2 hours and the place was jammed, god only knows what was in there to start with!!!!

Best jazz records I've seen in north Texas ever.

1961 Hubbard follow up to open sesame. Killer lineup, great record. This white B stereo sounds really good. I have no earlier press and would love a mono to compare. Mobley + Hubbard backed by philly joe Jones, Paul chambers and McCoy tyner. Yes!

This one's been on my want list many years for the cover mostly. Finally found a cheap one. The record is a little different. Mingus's style is unique, and the grouping includes a cello.

It's a well named album with Mingus going in some interesting directions

Horace quintet from 1960 not a bad album also maybe not one of his best. This is a 66 liberty stereo reissue. it sounds really good. These still have RVG in the runout

Jackie with ornette Coleman except he plays trumpet instead of sax? Weird. His tone is kind of odd.

Side one is some long form McLean thing, it's not for me. Side two is more straight ahead bop.

Least favorite of the haul so far. This is a 67 original liberty stereo press

I prefer the vibe on this one, just a straight ahead chill groover with Kenny Burrell and Stanley Turrentine backing Jimmy Smith. This is a really clean first press mono

The guy in front of me snagged a stone mint (mint plus!!) A Date with Jimmy Smith Vol 2 original mono, only $30 for that one I was jealous!! Same guy that got the newks time.

Idris Muhammad on drums and Lonnie Smith on organ.

The allmusic review is brutal.

"Lou Donaldson does attempt to loosen up a bit with Mr. Shing-A-Ling, but the whole affair is a bit stilted and misconceived. Not quite the full-fledged electric funk workout that was becoming commonplace for old-guard soul-jazz musicians in the late '60s, but not quite the bop-inflected soul-jazz of the early '60s. either, Mr. Shing-A-Ling falls into a netherworld that won't connect either with jazz purists or fans of grooving jazz-funk.

When the group does try to get funky on the record, the results just sound lazy -- there's no spark to the rhythms, or to Donaldson's melody lines, especially on the embarrassing cover of the pop hit "Ode to Billie Joe." When the quintet settles into a midtempo vamp, Donaldson, trumpeter Blue Mitchell, and organist Lonnie Smith do spin out some good solos, but the lack of energy and enthusiasm the group has for the material makes Mr. Shing-A-Ling a bit of a tiring listen."

Ouch.

Forget all that, the thing has some jams, and it sounds like they're having fun. They don't all have to be complex masterworks. Idris throws down a steady boom bap, and they stay right in the pocket. And Lonnie doesn't have a bad solo in him. This is a decent '67 copy not totally quiet, but it's not a quiet record either.

Museum copy of this one. Hard to believe it is almost 70 years old, the jacket looks new with four really sharp corners and no wear to the slick. I don't love the orchestrations but couldn't leave there it in this shape. There are a few moments, not enough, where chet, zoot sims & bud shank open up and play more uptempo bop, those tracks like "Love" are killer and better use the strings as accents instead of featured members.

Got a couple more jazz records in the mail today, taking a pause from the record fair haul to play these.

This Roots new jazz from 58 has the prestige all stars backed by Louis Hayes on side A and Elvin Jones on side B. I enjoy the old spiritual "sometimes I feel like a motherless child" , here performed two years before Odetta's iconic Carnegie hall recording.
