I don't venture in here very often as my knowledge of the genre is very limited and I don't listen to it very much. I have a few albums that I do really love, one in particular is Dexter Calling. Probably a bit of a generic pick but first time I heard it it blew me away and I've loved it ever since. I want to pick it up on vinyl and was wondering if any of you knew anything about the repressing's. Currently a company called Sowing Records has a pressing out. Should I skip this and just go for one of the Blue Note repressing's from the 70's that are around $40-$50?

I'd go for a 70s press they usually sound really good. Or a classic records reissue.

I regretted selling this a few years ago. Found a nice deep groove stereo copy today, cover was still in the shrink too.

That‘s a very solid Dexter Gordon album! Like @Texas said I would also rather go for a 70ties repress. Have not heard of Sowing records before but the fact that they press on colored vinyl as a standard isn‘t exactly a strong indication for audiophile pressings...

Joe henderson is so good on here. Worth it just for his playing on the title track but the whole record is super chill and good. The pressing sounds top notch, crystal clear and warm.

I found this today. Didn't know it, but I'm not going to pass up a record with fire on it and a dude holding bbq ribs in one hand and a saxophone in the other...plus shuggie otis. It's great! Solid digs today. I've been getting out a lot the past few months, been refreshing.

This was the first one I saw yesterday. At first it looked like ordinary antique stuff in all the bins - classic rock, country type stuff. Then I saw this one. I don't know the record but saw the lineup-- lee Morgan, Wayne shorter, Louis Hayes, bobby timmons, bob cranshaw, Albert heath. Ok, I'm in. Three are shorter originals, one by Morgan and one by timmons. This was April 1960 so maybe in shorter's first year still. Liner note actually by Cannonball Adderley. This copy looked very rough in the store but cleaned up awesome and sounds great. I like the record especially the shorter tracks.

So I've made my way through a number of cocktails this afternoon much to the chagrin of my wife. But I threw on Street Lady, and I couldn't resist this funky burner. I had "Witch hunt" on and felt the urge to jam along on the keys. And it's a super easy tune to jam to, it's ten minutes long and almost never changes key the whole time.

Anyway, this is a record I grabbed maybe ten years ago for a dollar or two before I knew much about jazz. I had a blackbyrds record and knew Donald byrds name. The cover is totally shot to shit but the record is super clean so I never upgraded it. What a killer record this is!!!!! And it's Larry mizell, George Butler and Byrd so how could it be bad. Butter smooth ,funky goodness.

This is grown folks music... if there is a better jazz funk record i haven't heard it. Every song just slaps so fucking hard you think you've heard how good it is, and then the next song starts. It's as good as any record I've got in the collection.

I agree with you 100% on street lady @tex it’s one of my favourite Donald Byrd Albums. I have the newest reissue that sounds great to me. I can’t remember if it’s the album before or after that one Ethiopian Knights is also really great and in the same vein. That Witch Hunt is such a great tune, it just hooks you right away. Good call to jam along.

I’m not that familiar with the Mizell Bros. So I looked them up. Based on their Discography and the Albums I’ve already heard of theirs I believe I found a new vein for me the to mine for gold.

@dollar I streamed that Byrd album today and it sounds great. I really liked the track Science Funktion but the whole album was solid.

@texas, love seeing all these blue note records,many I've not heard of before.

@crossedpete, Mizell bros. Work with Bobbi Humphrey is also well worth checking out. I've picked up her album Satin Doll twice now, and still can't believe I don't have a copy of her album Blacks and Blues 🤦(both involving mizell bros.)
