The Sleeper album for me was Waiting by Bobby Hutcherson. The tone of the album is right up my ally right now. The last track Hanging Out (with you) just might be my new summer Jam.Extremely summery, Pete!

To me that hook can easily be a hook to a monster song. If I only had the skills to produce a track.CrossedPete wrote: ↑Tue Apr 27, 2021 1:58 am Thanks @tex I’m happy with them. And I think The Kicker is a wonderful album, it‘s early Hutcherson (recorded 1963) and a really smooth listening experience.

I’ve been on a Bobby Hutcherson kick, listening to anything I can find with him playing. At first I checked out the other albums with the same band lineup and with the exception of cirrus all the other albums have a totally different vibe to them.
One track I found was a cover of Maiden Voyage off of the album Happenings. I think it sounds great. He’s credited in playing the “vibes” to me it’s almost as good as the original.
Anyone have any Bobby Hutcherson recommendations?

Hopefully ok. I grabbed a few other classics as well Thelonious Monk & Sonny Rollins and Somethin Else by Cannonball AdderleyCrossedPete wrote: ↑Thu Apr 29, 2021 12:08 amI‘m not too familiar with the discography of Bobby Hutcherson but I do really like Happenings as an album - and agree, the Maiden Voyage cover is great. There is a great sounding, now unfortunately very expensive pressing of Happenings from Music Matters (but guess there are also good sounding pressings for a decent price). And a recent Blue Note Tone Poet release of The Kicker which is very much worth owning.

Imagine your 17 year old self showing up to a studio to be the backbone for this lineup! That‘s a great album! Hancock was also pretty young, an amazing artist. The Tone Poet is on my wantlist, it was sold out when I did my last TP order.
