I love this feed. I like seeing what everyone else is spinning as I’m still fairly new to Jazz, its a great way to find new material for me to consume. That being said any/all recommendations are welcome. I would say I’m leaning towards 70s Jazz funk but any great music from any era is still great music.

This is another solid album I picked up a few months back.

It's gorgeous, Chris. In my opinion, Saxophone Colossus, very much like Eastern Sounds, is a true classic. It doesn't get as much publicity as it should because it is not a Blue Note, but it also suffers from being a ubiquitous cover image and thusly can be simultaneously properly represented yet still under appreciated. This mono pressing does it right.

This is a 1969 French pressing on BYG Records of the 1959 Savoy release, The Curtis Fuller Jazztet. It's a darn fine sounding alternative to the expensive original. Odd that it was issued under Golson's name, but the lineup here is absurd by any measure. Recorded at RVG's spot in Englewood Cliffs.

Golson - Tenor Sax
Fuller - Trombone
Lee Morgan - Trumpet
Wynton Kelly - Piano
Paul Chambers - Bass
Charlie Persip - Drums

That is odd. If they were gonna pick a name to issue it under other than Fuller it’s weird they didn’t choose Morgan.

It could have been a licensing issue. Or it could be that Golson was especially noteworthy in France around that time. I never have really tried to find out.

Last spin before I head outside for a lovely sunny Spring Sunday afternoon. If you like brubeck, you should like Desmond and man do I like Desmond. Like injecting pure uncut smooth into your veins

That’s quite a run Mateo looks like I got some homework. :)

Seems to me the companies that handle all these Jazz audiophile reissues are doing something right. When it comes to soundtracks the debate always seems to lean more towards OG copies but it seems like some of these audiophile Jazz reissues seem better the the original copies in some cases. It’s very interesting to me.

Kevin gray has all kinds of neat toys to get as close to what's on the tape, and there is much more care and effort given in general. And I'm sure much more $$.

I am learning, RVG does not necessarily mean that's what the tape sounds like. And crazy anecdotes like he did his stereo masters with only one monitor. The rvg sound great but need EQ fiddling and often gain on the low end. I guess these records weren't mastered with hi fi equipment in mind. They'd need to sound good on cheap players. I do think some of these deluxe remasters are the best possible representation of what's on the original tape more so than the originals.

As impressive as the pressings are I'm equally impressed by their ability to do such killer artwork replicas. There must be some wizardry there too, they look so good!!

I was out seeing customers today (some return to normalcy!) But was able to listen to the first disc of Funk In France which is the '69 Paris record which has a nice grant green-ified cover of "insensatez"

Another beautiful Tone Poet.
Great vibes! Didn't know that one was out as Tone Poet, has now landed high up on my wishlist. On that note, my wishlist in terms of Jazz records has pretty much exploded in the last months. It's not that I haven't been listening to Jazz already for years but the way I have been bitten by the Jazz bug this time is something else. Don't know if that has to do with the current state of the world, me appreciating other types of Jazz more, or me just getting older and/or more interested in musical craftmanship but in any case it's a very rewarding journey. Also happy that I invested in a solid DAC/streamer last year and can do the high-res streaming thing to expand my horizon and to properly check out some albums I'm interested in before purchasing the vinyl version as these can be quite expensive.

And @Pete re the audiophile re-issues: Yeah, that's a huge advantage, those records sound incredible and as @Texas also mentioned, in many cases (especially Music Matters or now the Tone Poet releases directly from Blue Note) they really go the extra mile with packaging and the photos inside the gatefolds from the sessions.

That said, there is also a market for OG Jazz records and purists might prefer those. But finding clean/NM or even VG+ copies of the top shelf albums (or even Tier B or whatever) nowerdays is REALLY expensive.

Jackie's bag!! Nice, early 70s? It's a killer lineup with Tina Brooks on the B side.

I've been trying to listen to Maiden Voyage but have to keep stopping it for phone calls and meetings

I totally agree with you @tex when it comes to reissues packaging so almost as important as the music itself. Especially as a collector/fan it’s nice to think you’re getting a little extra weather it be photos or liner notes or extra cues from the sessions.

@chris I feel I’m in the same boat as you when it comes to Jazz. Where before I might of dipped my toe in buying a classic album like Kind a Blue or Take Five and I really enjoy those albums but it’s just recently within the year or so I’m really spending a lot of time with Jazz. I have the same thoughts as you is it an age thing? Or am I more open to new music? Who knows, all I know is the water is nice so I’m diving in head first trying to stay down as long as I can till I need to come up for air. Then it’s back down seeing if I can go deeper. :)

Get it, Pete. that's easily one of the five best CTI releases in my opinion. Absolute stunner. Is that the single or double LP?

It’s the single LP gatefold. Didn’t know there was a 2 LP? Tell me more.

Top five eh. Can I guess four of the five?
Red clay, summertime, concierto, one,? Not sure. Am I close? :)

You are two for five.

In no particular order,

Red Clay
First Light
Concierto
Sunflower
She Was Too Good To Me

Runners up:

Straight Life
Olinga
Afro-Classic
EDIT: Salt Song

And if we count Bob James's early output, then things get more complex so I'll leave that out for now, since I think of it as Tappanzee co-prods.

Damn you were too quick for my second guess. Nice list.

I’ve only listened to bob James one and two. Are those the early albums your talking about? Did he do anything earlier than those?
