Well, I used to pair it with my other favorite 90s buddy cop sci-fi flick, Split Second, and it was an exquisite experience so I'll hope that you're doing the same. But perhaps my backup guess is Universal Soldier for no reason in particular.

Split second is something else and it was absent in my life for far too long. I did the same double feature not long ago and I have to assume I got the idea from you at some point.

Evening, Lads! Young ScoJo and I were discussing the absolute merits and pondering the relative underappreciation of the films of one Mr Anthony David Scott this afternoon when we suddenly found ourselves hatching a cunning plan. We intend to individually watch, not sync, the films of Tony Scott in chronological order and share our thoughts here afterwards. We will be viewing the films on the same day, but, again, not syncing. The ultimate goal, aside from thorough enjoyment and internet camaraderie, will be to establish our own personal rankings of Scott's films. We'd love any and all to join in and bask in all of the Scotty wonder. We propose beginning tomorrow (Sunday) with a double bill of the until recently unavailable short film, One Of The Missing, and 1983's The Hunger starring - oh, heck, you all know what The Hunger is. The Untitled Tony Scott Project will include only films he has directed. The videos for George Michael's One More Try and Kenny Loggins's Highway To The Danger Zone will also be included. lastly, we will be strongly encouraging the director's cuts for both Revenge and Crimson Tide. Heads up!

So it turns out that this version of ONE OF THE MISSING has been mislabelled as the 26min Tony Scott student film from 1969, when in actual fact it's a 50min TV movie version of the Bierce tale from 1979! It looks like the TS version isn't available to view sorry (it was up on MUBI once upon a time but sadly no longer), so I'll be starting the journey with The Hunger this evening.

What a ride is an understatement, I loved this movie, it was so good. I believe it was you who suggested this movie after I was praising the great Lance Henriksen. Once again Mr. Henriksen plays the leader of a gang and he does not disappoint and truly solidified to me how great a character actor he truly is. Thanks for the suggestion @scojo I really loved this movie.

A couple for me off the top of my head include: Keith David, Peter Stormare, Samuel Jackson and my all time favourite Gary Oldman but there are so many to list and I’m sure the list is always changing

I have not seen any of the new Godzilla and Kong (Monsterverse?) movies. But I got them all last weekend and probably will catch up on them soon. It sounds like I probably will enjoy those.

Although I have not seen any other The Howling expect the first one I find it an impressive feat to marathon any IV, V and VI of any franchise...

Tony Scott. I had no idea TS directed The Hunger, Top Gun and BHC 2. I knew TS was a movie director though :-) But could not think of anything he made...
I am in for this and I am happy to see you did not share any spoilers/insights thus far.

Half an hour ago I finished watching Universal Soldier: Regeneration (more on that in a different post) and I really want to start watching more Lundgren flicks. That voice gives me a tingly sensation. It is action movie ASMR.

Dark Angel is fantastic. If you want some more Dolph to watch I highly recommend checking out Red Scorpion, Showdown in Little Tokyo (Brandon Lee co-starring, one of my favorites), Masters of the Universe, Punisher, Johnny Mnemonic. I haven't seen Joshua Tree/Army of One or Men of War in a long time, I remember enjoying them but honestly it's been so long, maybe Mateo can chime in on these? Silent Trigger is truly ridiculous and worth a watch. And if for some weird reason you have never seen Rocky IV then fix that asap.

45. Universal Soldier: Regeneration (2009)



Okay, we're 17 years after the first one and the second JCVD UniSol we do not count. This is a completely different movie than the original. It is a great action movie. Lots of shooting and kicking and Russians. But for me it lacks the charm of the original. That mainly has to do with the period in which it was made. JCVD could do no wrong around 1992. Those movies were a lot a fun because of the mix of action and humor. They were more lighthearted. In the 2000s everything became more serious and tougher. That is not always bad.
This UniSol was simply put a decent and well made action movie. Well paced. And the Dolph Lundgren part was very strange. I expected a lot more from his role.

Only one more to go and then I can start writing my JCVD dissertation.

Thanks for the tips! I have seen Rocky IV and Johnny Mnemonic but cannot reminder anything of the latter. I do remember going to a bar/pub 20 years ago where they had the pinball machine. I did not like that machine.

I love this movie completely and I think it is a far better film than the original UniSol, but it is also an extremely different film as you outline. They are cut from wholly different cloths and I don't think really meant to be linked very heavily to each other. I think this is a The Raid-level piece of action genius perfectly shot and exquisitely framed. The strangeness of Dolph's role and the eerie ambiguity of the world around them only adds to the enjoyment for me. We are here for action and action only. To quote the 30th Century man himslef, "There is no hope." There is also one of the best extended take/one shot sequences in all of action cinema here where JCVD is clearing a building under bombardment by walking in, out, around, and through said building fighting all manner of folks along the way with nary a shaky cam in sight. It's tremendous.
