Pretty solid list there already @Bez. I don‘t see any major omissions there - but not being the biggest werewolf guy myself I could be mistaken.

I am not a werewolf gut at all so I am very curious to what is on offer. The list I compiled is a combination of a couple of 'best of werewolf' list on the internet. I was surprised that Ginger Snaps apparently has some following. The twilight saga is something I really don't want to watch... but for the sake of lycanthrope science why not. If I get that far in 2023...

NathanLurker wrote: Sun Dec 25, 2022 6:40 pm You could look into the Daninsky Werewolf series from Paul Naschy. Spanish werewolf horror.
That is a good one! Did not know about it... And 12 movies is a bit much, but I should at least watch the first one.
So they are only loosely related as in the character is the same in each, stories are not interconnected. I recommend the following

Night of the Howling Beast [1975]
Night of the Werewolf [1981]
The Werewolf Versus the Vampire Woman [1971]
The Beast and the Magic Sword [1983]

If you're going to watch one then start with the first one I suggested, it's probably my favorite. I love Naschy films

As much as I adore Wolfen, and would never put off somebody watching it for any reason… (spoiler) not a werewolf movie ;)

You should definitely include Howling II: Stirba, Werewolf Bitch (or, Your Sister is a Werewolf) and hey why not also Howling III: The Marsupials for the full Philippe Mora utter lunacy experience. Nobody ever needs to watch An American Werewolf in Paris, however.

I was a Teenage Werewolf is fun, daddy-o. And Werewolves on Wheels is a big personal fave.

Seconded Howling 2 & 3 recs

I'll also add 1975's Wolfguy from Japan starring Sonny Chiba, which has a killer soundtrack.

Wolf out, B-boy!

Now I think about it, this is a great project of yours. If you’re commited to a more-or-less chronological watch of your list it will be fascinating to trace the development and portrayal of this creature in Hollywood and elsewhere. Obviously the likes of Dante and Landis were heavily drawing on their love of the Universal films and the portrayal of wolf dudes, but other filmmakers were referencing other areas of original myth and folklore (Angela Carter/Neil Jordan, and filmmakers in Europe and elsewhere) that weren’t so indebted to or reliant on the mythology and tropes of the Universal era.

I’m tempted to try this myself!

btw I forgot to say before - you absolutely MUST add the great Belgian mad man Jan Kounen’s incredible 30min short La Dernier Chaperon Rouge (1998) to your watch list!!

Will check it out @ScoJo!

I am planning on keeping it chronologically. These old movies are excellent Sunday matinee viewings.
When thinking of horror thema’s I have seen very little werewolf stuff. And I don’t know a lot about its myth and folklore.
Very curious to see how these movie change thematically.

Were we’re going… we don’t need title screens! (or roads, for that matter ;)

I once screened this at a film festival and have never seen such an unimpressed crowd - even though they showed up for a film called WEREWOLVES ON WHEELS!

Here’s my take on the poster image… (could only find cropped version online)

Glad you did! His films in general are usually pretty good fun but there's a handful of werewolf ones that are just a blast. I really recommend the Night of the Howling Beast next if you decide to check out more.
