I've searched the posts in this section and can't seem to find anything relating to dead but still alive Laserdisc format. Curious if anyone else here collects these wonderful, huge, shiny discs? :)

I started picking stuff up last year after I came across a decent Japanese player in a second hand shop across the street from where I work. I stay away from the more mainstream stuff and try to pick up some of the more cult horror/sci-fi/animation releases (as well as a few Criterion Collection releases that I'm into).

Here's a few of my most recent discs...

One of my local record shops occasionally sticks an LD in the soundtrack section so I will catch a glimpse of one there from time to time. I think Lethal Weapon was the last one I saw, but, honestly, I only ever knew one person with a Laserdisc player and my lasting impression of the format is seeing them in racks at the high end music and electronics stores of my youth. They seemed cool and futuristic, yet oversized and sort of low tech like the computers in Blade Runner or the like. Maybe that's just nostalgia talking. Or, as one of my all-time favorite humans once said to me, "Do you know how much coke you can snort off a laserdisc? All of it."

Fuck I want that The Keep!!!

here are a few of mine.
Here is a complete collection of Devilman the tv series, movies and one offs.
I also have about 3 or 4 versions each of War of The Gargantuas and Frankenstein Conquers the World, just cause they have different covers.

Likewise, one of my local comic book shops used to have a huge selection of them back in the late 90's, they always interested me. No one I knew had a player so they were always something I saw in ads in american comics etc. The nostalgia factor played a big part in it for me, that and the opportunity to get a player for £30! haha. I picked up a second hand upscaler from eBay and I get DVD quality out of it. There are some pretty cool releases out there that i've never seen on any other format other than VHS.

Nice collection NMA love the cover art for Child's Play 2. I didn't know they made laserdiscs into the late 90's. I see Face Off there. I never thought that film would have been released in laserdisc format. Cool stuff!

@NMA - First, Screamers is a killer flick. Senselessly rewatchable. Second, awesome cover art for Hellraiser.

@BPW - I didn't know they were made that late either. Here's an interesting tidbit that I heard from my friend, Wikipedia, "The first LaserDisc title marketed in North America was the MCA DiscoVision release of Jaws in 1978.[8] The last title released in North America was Paramount's Bringing Out the Dead in 2000.[9] The last Japanese released movie was the Hong Kong film Tokyo Raiders from Golden Harvest. A dozen or so more titles continued to be released in Japan, until the end of 2001. Production of LaserDisc players continued until January 14, 2009, when Pioneer stopped making them.[10][11][12]"

@ All the STBC LD heads- This place never ceases to surprise and amaze me you beautiful, ponderous bastards!

@Mateo-thanks for the info. Jaws released in 1978, I didn't know they were released that early. I figured around 1984 or so. I remember going into the video store when I was growing up and seeing The Road Warrior laserdisc with that cool cover art. I just wanted the laserdisc for the cover alone. I didn't have a laserdisc player. Dam, now I'm going to have to play that score!

I'm happy to see a few more board members chipping in :)

LD sleeves are pretty awesome to look at, the Criterion LD's are interesting to go through. I have a Criterion Collection copy of Halloween on LD that still looks pretty damn good to me, you can even isolate the score and it has a separate John Carpenter commentary track. It's pretty awesome to see how the technology was later refined in DVD's but there's still something awkwardly enjoyable about playing a 12" size shiny disc.

@NMA That's a sweet collection! I love the design for Hellraiser.

@Mateo I agree with you on Screamers, it's a great little movie that rewards repeat viewings. Glad to see someone else here is a fan :)

Nice to see a Laserdisc thread here.
I love them, I don't have a player any more but love the discs, I love the weight and flatness, and of course the big artwork.

Here are some I bought this year..

I just got back from a guy that is selling 50,000+ records and also about 4000 laser disc. If anyone was looking for anything particular let me know. He was selling them for about 3-5 dollars. My friend bought Casino and the Fifth Element. I saw 2 copies of Bram Stokers Dracula, the Abyss, Silver Bullet, Escape from LA, and Alien.
