90s done!
My final film was Odishon. It has been at least 15 years since I watched this on DVD. Tremendous movie.

The Chinese Boxer
dir by Wang Yu (Jimmy Wang)
alt. title The Hammer of God

This was a treat to watch. I had a really shit day yesterday and put this on in the evening as old martial arts films are a bit of a comfort for me. For 90ish minutes I forgot about all the shit around me and just watched some crazy martial arts nonsense. Story is pretty typical for the era, evil guy shows up to challenge school, gets beat by the master, returns with group of thugs, kills master. Opens casino and town falls into downward spiral. Main character trains to take down these thugs (who know Karate!) and we get a 30 minute finale of almost non stop action. The film is very violent for the time, blood (very red paint) all over the place, brief nudity and some beautiful settings (there's a battle in the snow that's so good). Overall the choreography was very weak and rudimentary but it was 1970 so I'm more forgiving, lots of limp kick big slow overhead swings that are meant to be blocked. Fun times. 88 Films just put this out in the US on bluray which is their first official Region A release which is pretty awesome, they have two more coming over the next month or two which I'm pretty excited about too.

Thanks @bez. Today is better but it will probably be a rough few weeks for me, we'll see how it plays out. At least I have some movies and records to try and distract myself with

Kino's run of 70's TV horror lately has been simply incredible. things I never thought I'd see in such quality. There's more out there, keep it going!

The Medium dir by Banjong Pisanthanakun

As some of you know, folk horror is my jam. I love when films are rooted in a "local" legend or custom. This film was made specifically for me. It's framed as a documentary about a local shaman in a small Thailand village. During their filming of the shaman, her village and family some weird stuff begins to happy, her niece begins to act weird. At first they think that the local spirit the shaman "shepherds" is choosing a new person to take over her duties but as things begin to build and more is uncovered they discover it may be something more sinister. I'm not going to say much more but this film was really great and I highly recommend folks check it out if you're into this sort of thing. For the most part it's shot very well and very "professional" looking documentary which eventually devolves into some found footage antics at the end but it's all to pretty damn good effect. Available on Shudder

Headshot dir by Timo Tjahjanto & Kimo Stamboel

Hopping over to Indonesia for a foray into action. I enjoyed this one, it stars Iko Uwais (The Raid) as a man with amnesia. A doctor tries to help him out and through the process she gets wrapped up in people trying to kill Iko's character. The story is super basic and something we've seen in various forms over the years so don't come into this thinking it will blow you away plot wise. The action though, top notch. Iko was fight choreographer and the movie is almost non stop gun fights & hand to hand combat. It's brutal and a hell of a lot of fun. It's not on the same level as Timo's The Night Comes For Us but it's still work watching.
