I haven't had too much time for movies over the last few weeks but I managed to squeeze a few in this weekend. And I'm hoping to get a few more in this week before my insanely busy weekend

Vicious Fun. Dir by Cody Calahan
This was very far from fun. In fact this is one of the worst movies I've watched in a while. It was incredibly boring, once the "reveal" happens about 15 minutes into the film it plays out as completely typical as you can imagine. The films biggest issue is it's completely unlikeable main character. The main female character carries the entire film on her shoulders. So many over the top weird and obnoxious choices. A score that feels like it's trying it's hardest to ape Carpenter Brut & Stranger Things to the worst degree. I recommend not watching this one.

Fear Street 1994. Dir by Leigh Janiak
And here's a film that I expected to hate and really just had a ton of fun while watching. It does a nice job playing with common tropes. It's a 80's slasher set in the 90's with supernatural/witch through line for the story. A great little cast that has some characters that at face value seem super annoying but you actually are bummed when they do end up dying. Some nice gore gags. I am excited to see where it goes with the next part which takes place in late 70s summer camp.

Erotic Ghost Story. Dir by Ngai Choi Lam
Cat III erotic horror film directed by the guy responsible for Riki-Oh? Sign me right up. I picked the new special edition bluray of this from 88 Films. A beautiful package for a slow softcore porn with a fantastic final 15 minutes. This is not on the same level as Riki Oh or The Seventh Curse. But it's an interesting film that has it's moments and was at least entertaining to see what they were pushing sexually, stuff that you don't see in US films that's for sure. If you're into Cat III films and want to see one that rightfully deserves that rating, give this one a go.

Island of Fire. Dir by Kevin Chu
This film stars Jackie Chan, Tony Leung, Sammo Hung and Andy Lau. I knew it wasn't a Jackie vehicle as you rarely see it discussed in his film work and there's a reason for that, Jackie has essentially 3 main scenes. Sammo has about 4 or 5 scenes. Tony is probably who I would call the main character but the way the film is structured it feels like they only had 2 or 3 days where all the actors were on set the same day. Basically Tony's character is a cop, he witnesses the murder of his father in law, as the killer is escaping their car explodes. He discovers he's an ex prisoner and goes undercover at the prison to find out what is going on. Sammo is currently in jail, he meets him there, Jackie get's sent to jail for accidentally killing some one at a casino. So much happens in this film but it all feels like little vignettes. We focus on Tony's character then he gets put in solitary, then Sammo and then he goes to solitary, then Jackie and solitary and it keeps repeating until the final 15-20 minute scene. The film feels much longer than it is, has minimal action scenes. It's a mediocre film but I'm glad I watched it. I am curious I just read the Taiwanese version has 29 more minutes of footage, which would probably flesh out some of the stuff that just felt out of the blue. Maybe in a few years I'll revisit and watch that version.

Hey Inksb, I also picked up 88's Erotic Ghost Story. Never saw it before I bought their Blu, I also enjoyed it. The slow parts are comedic, I like the bits of Kung Fu and the little bit of demonic stuff at the end. How good cringey fun when the lots of them are like "sorry I slept with your man" and then he arrives and they all wink each other and then they're, in the next scene, playing tag in the field or something ahaha. The cringe stuff is good cringe, the cheesy stuff is delicious cheese, I would recommend.

Yeah there was so much just weird goofy fun. I found it kind of odd that the default language track was English, that's rare for 88 to do that instead of the original audio. And for some reason I couldn't got back to the menu from the film, I had to stop the disc and reload it. Seems like some minor authoring oversights or maybe my old ass region free bluray player is being weird.

Did you order Forbidden City Cop as well? I did not order that and it sold out pretty fast. I think Zavvi still has copies so I may place an order soon. I also need to order the two new Sammo films that Eureka put out.

Yes I did buy Forbidden City Cop but haven't watched it yet. I secure purchase for all the Asia line since I have all of them (except the 4 Korean ones) and they are the reason I went region free. I try to pick up the Eureka releases too. I secured Millionaire's Express cause I wanted to be sure to get the LE with the hybrid cut, but I have a couple of Sammi to catch up on.

Intrigued to see Arrow and 88's announcements coming up this Friday regarding Shaw titles.

That's awesome, I'm jealous you have the complete Asia line. I have all the Jackie one's and a handful of the Shaw stuff but far from complete.

Haha. I think I watched the first 3,5 seasons so many years ago. And everyone is telling me to watch it again or finish it. My girlfriend has never seen it. Maybe I should start it again together with her.

I really liked the first two seasons, but as some point it lost me and I don't remember why.

I'm in the minority and didn't really care for the show all that much. It's good, there's a reason for it's universal praise but I grew tired of the characters around s3 and that didn't really change by the conclusion. There are some seriously great "holy fuck" moments that kept me pulled in enough to finish it.

Watched this last night. Loved the busted old ass sci-fi vibe and western stylings. Felt like Deadwood in space. Main characters were a little flat. Overall a cool watch. Really enjoyed the score too by Daniel LK Caldwell. Never heard of the dude.

US folks who have yet to order Dead & Buried UHD release, Deep Discount is having a sale on it currently which you can also apply a 15% off code to plus free shipping. It's the best price I've seen on it and even with tax it's over $11 cheaper than Amazon's price.

Well, I have only seen the first three Saw movies. When another one after those was released I simply was not interested anymore. Because I heard some positive things about this one I gave it another try. And I enjoyed it. There is enough to dislike or irritate though. But in the end it didn't feel like 95 wasted minutes.

Halfway through I was thinking I liked it more than Till Death that I watched previously. That movie was enjoyable as well but for me not more than slightly above mediocre. If Spiral is 7/10 than Till Death is 6/10.

It surprised me to see Samuel L Jackson in both Kingsman and Spiral.

I stopped watching Saw after number 4 I think? It could have been 3. I was more interested in Spiral due to it being directed by the guy who did 2 and 3 (2 is the best in the series imo) and it had Chris Rock & Sam Jackson. I will definitely check it out now though.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway. Dir by Shūkō Murase
This was really good, animation was incredible, story while very typically "Gundam" it's still enjoyable to watch unfold. Characters were good. It suffers from being a Gundam film in the way that there are two or three really fantastic action sequences involving giant fucking robots and then a bunch of political drama for the rest of the run time. It's the first part of a trilogy I believe so I'm hoping to see more giant robot action in the sequels.

made by women and 72 minutes long which made it a very enjoyable horror/comedy about a pair of killer jeans...
far from perfect but not bad at all
