Many spring to mind, but I'd wager you've seen most of them. I'll have to marinate on this. In the meantime and from the same year as An American Werewolf in London, The Howling has some excellent werewolf effects as well.

The Thing is one of the crown jewels of the practical effects golden age. One of my favorite films.

Surely, you have seen The Fly, Hellraiser, Alien/Aliens, The Dark Crystal, Gremlins 1/2, Krull, Evil Dead 1/2, Neverending Story... where is Evan Campbell?

Check out everything Rick Baker and Rob Bottin have done in the genre.

@deafmetal: Indeed, I have seen all of those. All good suggestions though. In fact, I'd rate The Fly as another of those 'crown jewels'. I'm more looking for less celebrated flicks really, ones that time forgot!

@mateo: Of course, Braindead is all-time fav and absolute beaut. Good call, squire. Now, 'The Stuff' is one that I haven't heard of. I'm on it.
