Hey guys an Gals.

I am currently in the midst of planning, preparing and starting a new blog/website dedicated to the stuff I love. Which will be film scores, horror old and new, art, and a lot more. However, I am not a giallo expert but am slowly delving into the field. I want to document my experiences with it to help others like me that are not 100% on where to start with this stuff ( I have a beginners knowledge but I think you lot may know films I would easily miss). I would be grateful if the lovely folks here on this particular forum could advise on the must see movies of this genre as well as the more obscure movies so i can start to work on a beginners guide to giallo and a more advanced watch list. Any help you can provide to get me started would be very welcome.

I don't know too much about the genre, isn't it just another word for psychological thrillers?

Argento's L'uccello dalle piume di cristallo is a classic film which I assume falls into Giallo?

first of all the Bava's The Woman Who Knew too much and blood and black lace.
my top 5 is :
Who saw her die
What have you done to Solange
The house with laughing windows
Spasmo
and Fulci's 7 Note In Nero
+ Argento's, of course.

@philball1974 Yeah I think your right about the meaning of it. Makes me realise I should have been more specific. I'm looking for stuff in the 60s-70's Italian scene. But The Argento suggestion looks spot on cheers.

@HenrySpencer thanks for the suggestions. Lots of titles I haven't heard of there. Some good stuff to get me started. Thanks again.

@deathwaltz I look forward to reading that. I know a some of the more famous ones but I am sure you and others on this forum (as already shown above) will have some hidden gems I would never otherwise know about. Then the fun bit of finding them to watch and the scores to listen to.

The thing is when you start watching lots of Gialli is that you have to leave conventional film making ideas behind and succumb to incoherent story lines, so so dialogue but amazing music and dreamlike visuals.

Come on Phil ... play fair

I hand picked those and went and found trailers !!

you are just cheating ;)

also Body Count is a slasher and there is TONS of rubbish on that list !!!

I picked films that hardrain02 should see as these will give a good cross section of what the genre has to offer...

Cheers for the list Spencer, I shall start on these this weekend and be back for seconds shortly I dare say. I think I have strip nude for you killer in one of the "Box of the Banned" dvd sets I brought years ago so I will probably start with that. Some of these trailers look bonkers and intriguing at the same time. I think I have quite the journey ahead of me.

Right, time to devour all of these lovely trailers and hit up Amazon.

One of the problems I have with these films is the poor transfers to different media formats. There are some exceptions, but it is a bummer that there hasn't been greater care to reissue some of these beauties with higher quality picture and sound.

I watched Footprints last night as I had never seen it and I'm still somewhat gobsmacked at how beautifully it's filmed. Still chewing on the ending a bit too :)

Be sure to check the neo giallo works with the works of Alex Infascelli and "Occhi di cristallo"by Eros Puglielli ; definitly wants the soundtracks ;)
Tulpa could have been great too :(
Btw Spencer ; could you release some ; especially "Sei Donne..." ;)

@Hardrain02

Have you started your new Giallo website/blog you mentioned at the outset? That sounded interesting as it's a genre I'm just getting into also (inspired by all these soundtracks and deluxe Arrow Video releasees)? ;)

That aside, and a general question for this thread, any existing blogs that are good reference for this sort of movie?

@Spun Its not up yet. I want to get a small body of articles done initially so that there is plenty to look at from day one. Ill update as soon as its live.

you'll find lots of talk of giallo films online, of course. lists are quite commonplace >

http://whatculture.com/film/watch-me-wh ... -films.php

http://www.soundonsight.org/greatest-ho ... llo-films/

http://www.tasteofcinema.com/2014/15-es ... lo-movies/

https://mubi.com/lists/giallo-films

still some very honest low-budget giallo-esque non-italian films made that are inspired by giallo, before the idea of a b-movie became too cynical and never exactly cheap or inventive.

i rate directors like sergio martino and umberto lenzi for their work in the style, or in crime films often associated closely with it. ten years ago, you'd have had a great chance of getting lots of these on american dvd when noshame released many, but you'll have to search harder in many cases for obscurer & newer releases in countries like germany, these days - but check the USA & UK first if you want subbed releases, and consider english dubbed discs contemporary english dubs were nearly always made for wider distribution >

.. this isn't exactly the cheapest place to look at what's out there, but it's a good way of seeing the range 7 specifications of various editions as they cary such a variety >
