Alright, I have stuff to talk about. I had my second shot of covid juice and it knocked me on my ass on Friday, I spent the entire day on the couch watching movies, rewatching parts of movies I fell asleep through and all around feeling like some one sucked all the life out of me.

First up was...




In Hell. Dir by Ringo Lam
JVCD in a more dialed back roll, the fights were ground in reality. I felt like he did a good job with all the emotional beats, portrayed the man breaking down in jail quite well. The only unbelievable part was that he was American lol. I enjoyed it for what it was but not sure it would be one I'd revisit all that often. Definitely seems like they got a lot of locals to play the prison background people, there were a lot of weird stilted cheering and motioning going on.



The King of Staten Island. Dir Judd Apatow

I think any one's enjoyment of this film will come from how much they can tolerate Pete Davidson, he's playing his super fuck up schtick here and it's obnoxious as hell (obviously he's not supposed to be likeable at first). Like every Apatow film post Knocked up, it's way too fucking long. 150 minutes is too long for most movies, a dramedy stretched to that is a bit much. For me Bill Burr stole the show here. His performance is one of the best roles I've seen him in. Overall it was a decent film that did what it set out to do, I'll never watch it again and can't really recommend it unless you're a fan of some one in the cast or Apatow's other films.



Revenge. Dir Tony Scott
Finally got back to watching some Scott films. Revenge was up next (I skipped Days of Thunder, wasn't in the mood). I'll be honest here, the first half hour or so was pretty fucking boring. They really played up the hidden relationship thing. But once the turn happens the film picked up pace and Costner playing a wildy off the rails person getting revenge was quite interesting. He was such a dick to everyone. I was quite happy to see Miguel Ferrer show up. This one was good. Scott has such a knack for making his films look a very specific way, any one know if he uses the same DP for most of his 80's and early 90's output?



The Last Boy Scout. Dir Tony Scott
For those that have seen this they already know how awesome it was. Willis actually acting, doing that gruff asshole thing that he's known for. Damon Wayans playing an actual realistic character instead of a wacky comedic role. So many great lines through out. Extremely entertaining, it's been a long time since I've watched this and it reconfirmed it's one of my favorites from Scott.




Lost Highway. Dir David Lynch
I haven't watched this one in over 10 years, it used to be one of my favorite Lynch films but being so long since the last viewing I wasn't sure how it would hold up. Well it holds up. Still fucking love it. It's equally baffling as it is mesmerizing. I love the editing in the final scene with the cops chasing Bill's character on the highway, it's so well done with the music. Patricia Arquette is fantastic in it.

Speaking of the car chase finale scene from LH, years ago I once set the DVD to A/B repeat that scene and left it running with the volume super loud for a whole afternoon, just blasting away in one room of my flat. It was like a spontaneous Lynch installation and a lot of fun. Neighbours must have thought it was the Apocalypse!

The Mechanic and Mr. Majestyk are two of my favorites. (unless you're criteria is strictly 80's and then ignore me)

And I agree, they are absolutely in the correct order already form an objective lens, even though 3 is my favorite because its just so over the top but not yet "cheap" the way those last 2 feel.

Thanks for the tips. I remember loving The Mechanic but I don't think I have seen Mr Majestyk. I ended up getting another dozen of his flicks from the seventies and eighties. I am not going to do another JCVD-style run of Bronson flicks though but they are excellent material for day time viewing.

I still need to see The Mechanic, it's been on the list for a while but just haven't got around to it. I started a film last night that I'm really digging but ended up being a bit late and stopped it half way through. Hoping to finish it tonight.
