I've heard some intriguing things about this one- Disney's first 18 cert film, shot in 2018, dumped from release during pandemic and now on VOD. The marketing, such as it is, really sucks - avoid the trailer I hear, and the poster is appalling.
It's a horror-crime-thriller hybrid, score is by Chris Young. I will report back with thoughts.

Beautifully made, very good performances, interesting things for sure - but I might have to give it a second watch (which I feel happy enough to do) before I can properly comment on the story. Think I missed a few things. I can say that once again Chris Young (with Lustmord in tow) has provided another fantastic horror score. This is definitely an odd hybrid of sorts, and I wasn't a million miles away at all in saying that it was giving me The Endless vibes.

Brilliant in nearly every respect, there are lines here, especially in the first sequence, that still make me burst out in laughter. It goes from melancholy to camp to serious to tender with a deftness and skill that frankly is lost in today's movies. Billy Wilder made more than one masterpiece, but i feel like even this one gets lost in the shuffle by too many.

It is unfortunately only half the movie it was supposed to be, but what is here is nearly perfect. the 70's saw a bit of a rush of Holmes movies, and all of them try to bring something new to the canon, but few of them have the humanity and subtly of this one.

If you have any taste for this sort of thing, check it out. If the score by Miklós Rózsa doesn't break your heart a little, you may not have one.

I agree with this all 100%, but especially your comment on the music. It's a hall of fame theme for me.

Also, they had me with 'Holmes movie featuring the Loch Ness Monster!'

(But yeah... we really missed out on something very special with the loss of those additional segments - the surviving images of the 'Upside Down Room' segment are really tantalizing!

They actually found the original prop at the bottom of the lake in 2016 during a routine dredging or something. imagine pulling that thing up and not knowing what it was.

Also Christopher Lee gets to stretch certain acting muscles he rarely got to play with, and his role in particular is a treat to see

1965, John Neville is an awesome Holmes, a nice mischievous glint in his eye and a wry smile on his face. one of the most fun Holmes movies ever made. The same material (Holmes vs Jack the Ripper) would be tread in 1979 by Bob Clark with Murder by Decree staring Christopher Plummer in a much more grisly and grimmer film. (the always awesome Frank Finlay plays Lestrade in both versions) Neville is a perfect Holmes, once again suffering from a less than perfect Watson (a tough character to get right). Like most British period thrillers of the era, Hammer comparisons abound, although Hammer's own Holmes film is considerably less lurid as it was earlier in their own history. Bonus points for the most screen accurate Mycroft I've yet to see with Robert Morley looking like he sprung whole out of the original Strand magazine illustrations.

6 part police procedural dramatising real life case of a murdered female journalist, killed whilst doing story on a crazy Danish guy who built his own submarine. It's a truly shocking and nuts story, thanks to the Danish justice system which is very heavily weighted towards the accused/demanding rock solid evidence of foul play.

What makes it personal for me is that, bizarrely, about a month before the murder a friend of mine visited the sub guy herself and he took her out on the water! I have a photo of her stood on the deck waving with him next to her, it's completely nuts.

We watched Soul last Thursday. I really loved it and found the whole concept very inventive and well thought out. I might buy the score as well at one point. Does the score also have the jazz parts on it?

Yesterday we watched that Collega Admissions Scandal on Netflix and Atticus Ross also made the score for that. I haven't listened to a lot of Atticus Ross scores but I do have the feeling it is sounding a bit too much of the same electronic bleeps as I have heard in NIN songs for the last 15 years or so. It is that repetition of a couple of notes that is so recognizable that for me it does not sound very original anymore. But maybe I should delve deeper again into stuff Reznor and Ross made in the last ten years.

Yep, fantastic series... so subtle and very human, there’s a podcast too that goes into the background of making the show

And a documentary about the convicted klller by a woman who was filming him right until the day of 'the incident' which sounds fascinating, but sadly Netflix pulled it from their schedule due to some of the volunteer employees of the guy complaining that they didn't give permission to be shown.
