It's funny you say that, Only God Forgives did nothing for me and I've pretty much liked or loved all of his other films. I should revisit it. I feel like it may have just been one of those days where no matter what I put on I would have been negative towards it.

It really is one of those- I absolutely loved it, but have no confusion at all hearing that it was hated by others. I actually sent my sister and brother in law running to the flicks to see it, high on the fumes of my adoration (and my sis is waaay into Goose) and it's possible that neither have forgiven (aherm) me since. It feels like our relationships all shifted that day.

I did not care a lot about it seeing the trailer. But the reviews seem to be very positive.
I guess you are not impressed?

Ha...well, I was curious about this one as I'd heard that Noe had reigned in the 'shock' factor a bit (I've hated every one of his films since I Stand Alone) and I did like the premise... he's undeniably a terrific filmmaker, I just always struggle with his subjects/characters. This film is an unmitigated parade of insufferable shitheads. In particular, his obsession with arrogant, vacuous skinhead whiteboy shitheads is a HUGE turnoff for me, even when I'm being wowed by the brilliant filmmaking.

So yep, it has all his trademarks once again, but I found this one to be a tad more bearable and actually really enjoyed the big opening dance scene/10minute take, amazing energy and you can tell he is really in awe of dancers. But then he rips off the mask of 'talent' and revels in a punitive descent into acid-fuelled (??) viciousness and misanthropic loathing. It's really a bunch of bull, tbh - I have a fair bit of experience with LSD in my past, and there's not much in the behaviour displayed by these narcissistic a-holes that tallies with the drug. I guess he just plucked a drug out of the air, as a 'maguffin' for his usual People Behaving Badly shockfest. I think he could have chosen a different pharmaceutical and it would have been way more believable. (I mean, these fucks descend into the kind of hell reserved for the poor experimental 'Nam squad in Jacob's Ladder, and they had to make up a drug in that flick to justify how crazy everyone went!)

All in all, I'd recommend this if you're really into film 'experiences', the music is super tight (Aphex, Moroder, MARRS, S-Express...it's set in '96) and it's lit/filmed as usual by a certified genius, but you might find that like me, even 90minutes in the company of such a hideous group of hedonistic, immature wankers will test the fuck out of your patience.

Haha. Thanks for your review. I think I will watch this in due time at home. So I can turn it off.

@ScoJo, thanks for the Climax review. I've been curious but like you always put off by Noe's films.

I need to revisit God Only Forgives. Time to track it down. I'm working from home tomorrow. Maybe I'll give it a watch while I'm working.

so I threw on that first jack reacher in the havkground while working on the apartment, still a fun flick. Then I started watching the second one after we briefly talked about how “meh” it is, and about 20 minutes in realized the bad guy is the guy who played Sam Whitemoon in Creepshow 2, so I turned it off and watched that instead.

Overall a better decision.

Yesterday Boogie Nights. First time my girlfriend had seen it. I forgot how great I actually think that movie is.
Tonight we first watched Call Me By Your Name. Although it was a very good movie and beautiful story it is not the best movie of 2018 as some people tend to make it out. Unbelievable though that it is from the same guy how made the new Suspiria.

Now my girl went to bed and I am starting this:

And everything on my new 55 inch 4k oled. After having had a 40 inch HD lcd for over ten years this is an impressive step up. Even when viewing older movies.

@Bez- is this the 1976 Australian/Peter Weir film? If so, bravo... I've never come across it before, sounds ace!

Congrats on the new screen sir, I couldn’t spring for the OLED myself, but the regular old LED in 4K is already blowing me away. I picked up some classics on 4K, and let me tell you right now...pick up the Christine restoration ASAP. It’s stunning, the red of the car is so deep and rich, looks blood red and shiny.

It’s amazing how much more resolution you can get when a restoration is done well, I watched the first ten minutes of the 4K of bladerunner tge other day, and having just seen it again in theaters I was stunned at how perfect the transfer was. Now I patiently await Alien’s inevitable 4K release so I can lose my mind again.

Movies, y’all

i've never watched a movie in 4k; i've only ever seen 4k displayed in stores showing nature scenes and whatnot. does the increase in resolution and clarity take away the "film" look of movies and make them look too real? my one issue with movies shot digital vs. film is that the illusion dissolves and everything looks too real...if that makes sense.

The tv display settings in stores are on “vivid” or something like that, you’ve got to switch it to movie or cinema mode, and sometimes play with the calibration or get a professional to calibrate (expensive, but might be worth it one day) also you need to turn of the motion smoothing effect that gives everything that shot on video soap opera effect. Properly calibrated, even with the newest presets on most tv models these days, gives a gorgeous filmic look that’s as close to theatrical presentation as you could get. Obviously it also depends on the transfer being down properly. W rare also VERY used to TVs white balance and color temperature being all wrong and too cold so if you do upgrade and set the TV right, things will look a little dimmer and warmer than you might be used to, but after a few days of watching the proper picture you’ll never be able to look at the colder temp settings without everything looking blue and washed out.

I fiddled with my calibration for days before finally just leaving it on the expert cinema mode and bumping up the contrast a tad with the soap opera effect turned off and everything looks stunning.

Every company calls that effect something different, but you can almost always turn it off (and should unless you are watching sports or something live like that)

Pretty much what Hatter just said. I used to calibrate TV's for a few years, I was certified by ISF (Imaging Science Foundation) to calibrate TV's. While I wasn't the best at it, I was only part time and not a daily occurrence, I could make most TV's look way better than they come out of the box. What I recommend to people who don't want to spring for an actual calibration as they are not cheap ($300 for cheap ones, upwards $1000 by top tier pros) is to go to AVS forum and download their free calibration disc. You can't calibrate colors by eye, no matter what you think it's just not possible. Brightness and Contrast on the other hand can be calibrated pretty easy and the patters on the disc make it really easy. Follow the instructions in the manual and your TV will be looking pretty good. Turn off all motion settings, they are garbage and add frames to to "smooth" out the image giving you that awful soap opera effect or "too real" feeling.

For most TV's you just need to put the TV in Cinema/Movie mode and adjust the brightness contrast. Also check out www.rtings.com for some basic calibration tips for specific models as each one has it's own quirks and weird settings. If you have an LG with ISF Expert mode (sometimes day and night versions) use that. It's pretty close to a calibration.

As for @skeletonbutt's question about 4K movies looking too real, no they generally look fantastic. Both old and new films. I have a handful of the Marvel films, Pacific Rim and John Wick's all in 4K and they looks stunning. On the flipside I have E.T. Halloween, Christine and they are all simply the best I've ever seen them. Well the color timing on Halloween is arguably wrong but that's a whole other conversation due to Dean Cundy approving damn near every transfer he glances at of his films from 30-40 years ago. In fact a lot of the older films have better grain than their bluray counterparts, unless the studio or revisionist director removed it (James Cameron is extremely guilty of this with his T2 UHD which I don't recommend buying at all, it's a blue tinted, plastic smeary mess of a transfer) but I digress. Overall 4K is great and if you can upgrade do it.

@hatter Alien is coming in 4K, I'm sure to the US eventually but the UK is getting their disc in April and the beauty of UHD's is that they are completely region free so I'll be ordering myself a copy when it's released.

Inks, if you are ever down state come calibrate my set for me haha!

Yeah I got an LG, and the only thing I changed on the ISF expert (dark room) setting was a little contrast bump and I adjust the backlight depending on when I’m watching, but otherwise it looks great. I have no idea if the warm2 setting recommended is close to d65 on my set, (like you say, no way to check by eye) but it feels right and everything looks solid.

(Sorry to hijack the thread)

Also, we could go on for days about the Halloween color timing et al. Is the 4K remaster close to that 35th anniversary Blu-ray, or is it the VERY green grass looking one from the first HD master (If I haven’t switched them, i get them all mixed up, you are spot on about cundey)

and yeah I second avoiding T2 until they fix it, not sure what Cameron was thinking, well, we know what he was thinking because he was so excited about “cleaning” the print, he made similar comments about Aliens when that got released on blu. almost worse than that waxy predator Blu-ray, although I do hear the 4K of that is an improvement with some actual grain once in a while.

Wait, sorry for the double post, are 4K region free always? Because if so then I’ll be monitoring that dawn of the dead release much more closely.
