Just finished up a Christmas horror marathon with my film club: Better Watch Out (2017), Christmas Evil (1980), Rare Exports (2010), and Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984). (We already watched Black Christmas and Krampus years ago.) I think Silent Night was seriously underrated when put into that perspective. Christmas Evil, although more subtle, can get so unbelievable it's distracting. Better Watch Out is FRESH. We all went in with low expectations and bit our tongues through a slow start, but we were REWARDED, and Rare Exports gets the same treatment. It was completely hushed in the states as far as I know (I don't remember even hearing about it), but it's a damn fine horror film, wildly creative, and mocks the goofery of Krampus with a far more hardcore, unforgiving portrayal of the old Clauset case. Better Watch Out is great to recommend in a group, but Rare Exports will do more to satisfy us weirdos this season. Now it's off to Horror and Boobs!

I remember the trailer to rare exports and the moment it showed up on Netflix I was on that like white on rice, that movie is so gleefully original and completely committed to the weirdness of its premise, I should give it a rewatch.

Saw Rare Exports on New Years Eve 2010 with my Folks and (the then future) Mrs Sanboval. The next year it became our third Blu Ray purchase (after the Blade Runner box set and the Neil Young Archives). It, along with Die Hard, is the only Christmas movie I watch every year without fail. Personally, I don't think it gets much better than that.

also, it can be a little saccharine, given the source material, but is everyone familiar with the George c Scott version of a Christmas carol? It’s by far my favorite version and I think it’s because some of the “horror” elements are really heightened in certain scenes. For my money Jacob Marley is never more terrifying than frank finlay’s rendition...some high gothic spookiness there!

And while we are on the subject, might as well make a list for the rest of the month, apart from previously mentioned holiday fare I’ll need to get to:

Lovin' the title and poster...film isn't great so far. It's kinda Prince of Darkness meets Hausu in some ways, from '89. Nice KNB effects.

BUT! I'm mainly on board because it features the ever awesome Brian Thompson. Fell in love with that dude after his incredible bit in Miracle Mile, then found out he was in Terminator etc etc etc

Never seen that, but that description has legs hahahahaha, too bad it sounds like it’s not that great.

Brian Thompson is everywhere, I think the first time I remember seeing him was as the alien bounty hunter in the x files. He’s all over 90s genre TV, and it wasn’t until years later I realized he’s one of the punk kids in terminator.

Disaster Artist: beautiful. It’s what LaLa Land will never be, a insightful, thoughtful and witty story about life in the movies, about how nobody can predict what makes a successful film or understand the alchemy involved. You just put it out there and see what comes back.

It’ll have more humanity than Star Wars that’s for sure, i reckon it’s got oscars coming but who knows?

Yeah fuck it! But it’s basically about the same thing, it’s the industry examining itself. Only this time, the acting is superb, writing fantastic, direction, the lot. The only downer production wise, ironically like LaLa, is the lack of 90s smoking/drinking/subculture. It has the same revisionist hangups, but I guess it has to - the only nod is in an opening sequence which does a quick montage down sunset boulevard, hookers and premiers side by side which is very 90s/divine brown. Which is a million years closer to reality than the squeaky clean bullshit masquerading as history LaLa.

Not yet, thanks for the tip. Godless was ok, but not great. Some good characters and moments, but the story was a bit of a let-down with how they wrapped things up.

Just started yesterday and enjoyed the first episode.

It's quite a big 'thing' here in Germany (first ever German Netflix series; don't know if there even has been a German mystery show before). Some critics are comparing it to Stranger Things, I would say it has some Twin Peaks and IT added to the mix - plus this German/European 'vibe' and look (which maybe makes it feel more unique than it actually turns out to be storywise but I guess a lot depends on how they resolve the mystery, so let's see).
