I have been wanting to delve some more in comedic movies. In the 90s and early 2000s I remember regularly enjoying the American comedies with Will Ferrell and his peers.
Also remember absolutely loving Kung Fu Hustle.
Kung Fu Hustle still holds up incredibly well. Definitely worth revisiting

Weeknights have been tough to watch movies lately so we have been squeezing in a bit more TV. A few highlights of stuff I've watched lately are

The return of Severance. I love this show and season 2 is so far living up to the first season

Ranma 1/2. We watched the first season of the new 'remake' of this series and it's really fun. Highly recommend if anyone is looking for a light hearted comedy action style anime. I talked to a friend who's a huge fan of the original series and he recommended we check out the OVA's that came out after the original series finished which we just finished. Those were also really fun. The new series did a great job of capturing the old series

Shrinking. I had very low expectations for this but it's some of the best written comedy characters I've seen in a while. Jason Segal is really good, Harrison Ford is very good and for me the highlight is Jessica Williams. Her character is so good and I enjoy every scene she is in.

I had no idea what this would be. But I saw a lot of people very happy with it online. So that made me curious.

Incredibly creative. To long though. First half was not as good as the second half.
When you’re in your 20s or drunk or stoned I can imagine this being hilarious.
I enjoyed it.

I felt very uncomfortable during the largest part of this movie…
End titles showed Fabio Frizzi for the score. And it was a really good score.

Don’t watch this together with your girlfriend (I thankfully didn’t)

I found this one so boring
I agree. But it had its moments.

I also watched Dark Match and found that to be boring. Not terrible but definitely not good.

However, I need to add that I was pretty tired during my viewings. That doesn’t help either.

Realise I didn’t offer thoughts on this. Partly because I couldn’t finish it ;-)

So this fanedit is pretty out there - they decided to construct a ‘shooting script’ version of the film using available official releases, outtakes, deleted scenes and some things constructed entirely from scratch! The most prominent scenes that are in the final shooting script but missing from all released versions are Deckard’s visit with Holden on life support, Chew’s death and aftermath, Leon hiding up on the ceiling watching Deckard search the bathroom in his hotel room, and Zhora’s snake dance.

The WDC starts really promisingly, with different text treatment upfront and different opening. The narration is there (and expanded- was the V/O really in the shooting script? I always thought it was added after the first DC was screened, mandated by test reactions, only for the original theatrical release?). In the first half hour or so there are many really fun little tweaks, including visual effects and scene/shot extensions created wholly for this fan edit - and a lot of them are really not bad!! (There’s a fully rendered CG shot of Gaff’s Spinner transforming during take off that is shockingly decent, along with a variety of extra Spinner-in-flight scenes) The introduction of Deckard at the noodle place? The front of that crane down has been digitally extended so that we pull down through a fully rendered cityscape into Chinatown, then blending with the shot as we know it - and it’s pretty damn good! The movie has a whole different rhythm up to this point and I must say, I wasn’t hating it.

But then trouble starts at Leon’s hotel. The full scripted scene of Leon hiding in the bathroom has been created from various deleted and repeated shots of Bryon James, including one that has been slowed/adjusted to suggest him up above looking down, but they just repeat the same shot too many times - like, five or six, when it really didn’t need the overemphasis. I’m tempted to do my own cut of this scene and fix it haha!

There’s further tweaks after that including establishing shots of Chinatown at street level that are created whole cloth or just using tiny snippets of existing shots and expanding them, all based on Syd Mead’s concept art - very cool! There’s a shot of Leon emerging from a subway to meet Batty that isn’t bad at all. Then the whole thing with Chew’s death and subsequent investigation/discovery of his body is pretty cool too.

Unfortunately all this fun and games then comes to a screeching halt at Taffy’s bar, and a scene which made me pull the plug (for now anyway- I may well attempt a watch of the rest sometime)
Zhora’s snake dance in the script was presumably never shot, and so true to the editor’s stated mission, they have fully rendered it with new cgi. And oof… I tell you: it is ROUGH. Like, Playstation 1 cut scene rough. And that might be being kind actually. Their ambition here is wildly beyond their talents and means, so sadly you are suddenly just watching some goofy ass fan bullshit and fully taken out of the ‘alt cut’ experience.

Anyway so yeah, I hit stop on the dope remote pretty hard at that point. Shame - there were some genuinely thrilling moments in that first 45mins and I was mostly pleasantly surprised and impressed by what had been pulled off! A very interesting project for sure. Here’s the trailer:

Because my girlfriend doesn't like 'strange' movies and wants to watch some easy stuff during the week I got a bunch of movies in the realm of comedy/romance. And I am not ashamed to admit that I also can enjoy some of those tearjerkers.

One of the movies on the list was Harold and Maud (1971). The first 20 minutes my girlfriend uttered the words 'what a strange movie' a couple of times. But when Maud entered the picture that changed. What a beautiful character.
An what a brilliant movie. Bizarre and dark and funny.

I just finished watching The Wicker Man again for a review. I’m a big fan of the original and so was already skeptical but I discovered it is a chocolate with a horse manure centre. It looks good and it even tastes ok at first and then all of the sudden, awful. It is beautifully shot.

Must be around 20 years since I saw this last but it only seems like a few weeks ago, I can literally feel that movie.
Thanks for the reminder, though, will rewatch soon.

It was not bad. But not good either. Love Cynthia Rothrock. It simply was a bit boring between action scenes.
And if Crackhouse scores a 3/5 then this is a 2,5/5.
