I watched it for the first time last night, and quickly switched to the Rifftrax version to protect my sanity, then just as quickly flipped to listening to the FM3 podcast patreon episode which was hilarious. Clint is of course fabulous and mesmerising in it and the 'talking cop puppet heads' scene is derangement on 17 levels, but seriously - I've never seen a regular motion picture that screamed I WAS MADE BY A PORN GUY as much as this one!!

Oh it's not good at all but I had a blast rewatching it a few years ago when Vinegar Syndrome released the bluray of it. They also have the Joe Bob Briggs segments from Monster Vision onthere which is a fun way to watch it too, he even brings Clint on for an interview.

The Mechanic was terrific. I had not seen it although I thought I had.

Now for something real old-fashioned. The first of the disaster movies craze from the seventies... I can't believe how long some of those movies are.

I really don't give a damn what anyone else says about this one, besides a very problematic last ten minutes I really really dig this film - it looks gorgeous, the performances are great, De Palma do what he do and the Morricone score is incredible. So... everyone can keep their hate to themselves okay? ;-)

Right, I'm off to Mars.

I have never seen Mission to Mars but about a week before our Tony Scott quest I was thinking of watching all of De Palma. I wanted to start with Murder à la Mod.

What a fucking trip this film is. Just bat shit crazy from start to finish, high octane frantic energy is almost every scene. Rosie Perez is fantastic and Javier Bardem is great as well (that hair cut is stylish lol). I've always heard this one was good, in fact I've been recommended a lot of films from the director but I think I've only seen one or two of his. I'll probably remedy that now. There is a really nice HD version of it up on Shudder for those that want to check it out, highly recommended but definitely not a family film.

The Straight Story. Dir by David Lynch
This was a first time watch for me, I knew of it but not much about it. What a beautiful and heartfelt film. The entire time I kept waiting for something awful to happen (that's just where my brain goes) and it never does. An old man who want's to make amends with his brother who just had a stroke before they can't. He can't get a driver's license anymore due to his vision and legs so he decides to drive his lawn mower 300+ miles to see his brother. I loved it, it's both very un-Lynch and Lynchian at the same time. It has all the weird small town Americana characters but none of the insanity. Lovely movie.

This was an anime that was on my radar for a few reasons, first it was a black samurai story, second giant mechs & magic, third Flying Lotus was doing the score. It also happened to be animated by MAPPA who are reponsible for a handful of really well animated action based anime lately (Fireforce & Jujitsu Kaisen to name a few). All of these elements combine to create a fantastic little series. The animation is generally great but they definitely cut corners on smaller background stuff with lesser characters to put the money into the big fights. The story is really good, a black man is taken in by a lord and he becomes a samurai, said lord is killed and samurai abandons his livelihood as his lord is gone. Fast forward many years, he's living in a small village and a team of mutants/super power/mecha come to find a girl with "ancient powers". I'll leave it at that, the story isn't anything new or ground breaking it's just entertaining. Voice acting is great, character designs are fantastic and again I'll reiterate how good most of the big action scenes are. The show's main drawback is that it's too short and they condensed 2 story arcs into 8 episodes with very little character growth. The show itself has character growth but it's not really believable as what would take place over 4-5 episodes is now 20 minutes. Really it's biggest drawback is that it just feels rushed, this show could have easily been two 10 episode seasons. I had a lot of fun with it and wished there was more. I can't imagine there will be though with how it concluded.

I love the Straight Story!

I watched this tonight and am very curious about what other people think. @Mateo doesn't appear to be around at the moment but he pointed this one out to me weeks ago.

The sound design and score were very interesting for sure. The movie as a whole I need to digest a bit. Overall I did like it.

@Inks I'm a huge fan of The Straight Story. Lovely and very simple story, and some great performances, and still Lynchy in a lot of great ways.

Time to get back on that TS train. It’s been a couple weeks since I watched a Tony Scott movie so here goes a first time watch of Revenge

I did watch a couple things recently first was Split Second, a movie that was completely new to me. I got to say I thought it was a lot of fun and makes me want to go down a Rutger Hauer rabbit hole. A question for anyone across the pond was this a theatrical release?

I also watched Rambo: Last Blood. The movie it self isn’t the worst thing but to call it a Rambo movie is a stretch. My biggest take away is I would love to see a slasher type movie with Stallone cast as the psycho killer. Almost like a Michael Myers Stone cold force of evil type. I think he could pull it off

Finally I might eat my words on this one but is anyone watching Gangs of London? I’m only 2 episodes in but so far so good. The fact that the creator/ fight coordinator is Gareth Evans I was in. I’m a huge fan of the Raid films so when I found out he was doing a show I knew I had to check it out.

Speaking of the Raid wasn’t there supposed to be a third instalment? Whatever happened to that?

Gangs of London is good. Fight scenes are excellent and honestly the episodes that Gareth directed are the highlights. There's an incredible scene around the half way point that involves a grenade that I absolutely loved. The show isn't perfect but I will definitely watch more if Gareth is involved.

As for The Raid 3, it's not happening anymore unfortunately, here are some quotes from a podcast with him
“I couldn’t see myself going back out to make ‘The Raid 3.’ My interests had moved on to other projects,” said Evans, who’s since directed the Netflix horror film “Apostle,” and created and directed episodes for the new British crime series “Gangs of London.” “You work with other people, you meet other people and want to work with them again, you want to try different things, you find a story that suddenly captures your attention and that’s the thing you want to do next. Things get offered to you that are hard to pass up on.”

The story was going to go back in time to the moment in ‘The Raid 2’ when the Goto Gang, the Japanese gang, are having a meeting, and Goto tells his right-hand man to take care of it, wipe out every corrupt cop and politician that they have on the books and start fresh,” said Evans. “‘The Raid 3’ would begin with Rama coming out of that building after having killed everybody and saying ‘No, I’m done’. He walks away to [police officer] Bunawar, who’ll be waiting for him in his car, he gets in and drives away. And you stay with the Japanese gang, who are like, ‘What the fuck do we do now? Everyone’s dead, we’ve got no-one to kill.’ They get into their car, and as they’re driving along all of a sudden this other car rocks up alongside them and just blitzes them, and the cars crash. Goto, his son, and his right-hand man are the only remaining survivors from that attack, and it cuts to credits and says ‘The Raid 3.'”

I did enjoy his film for Netflix, Apostle. I know a lot of people did not like it but I'm a bit of a sucker for Wicker Man inspired cult movies.

My Lynch exploration continues...

I watched a handful of his shorts, some I've seen while others I have not.

Six Figures Getting Sick is very very much an art school project.

The Cowboy and the Frenchman is an odd duck. Lynchian but more basic and stagey. Henry Dean Stanton just yelling bc he can't hear. There's some fun goofy stuff in here even if I feel like it's completely unnecessary in Lynch's filmography.

Premonitions Following an Evil Deed. This is probably the best 1 minute short I've seen. It's fantastic, love how much when into this to get all the set ups and his "cuts" are clever since it's one take.

Mulholland Drive. Dir by David Lynch
I think this is the first time I've revisited it since Criterion put it out on bluray. For many years I thought this or Lost Highway was my favorite Lynch film. I would say that has since changed. After revisiting it this weekend, I still love it but I would say Wild At Heart and Lost Highway are back at the top of my Lynch list. I always forget how "normal" and slow the first 90ish minutes are and then it goes off the rails in all the right ways. I still find the final act thrilling and some of the best crazy Lynch out there.

This weekend will most likely be my first Inland Empire viewing. I know a lot of people don't like it so my expectations are set pretty low.

Army of the Dead. Dir by Zach Snyder
Interesting poster as the only moments of the film with something remotely close in color palette is the title credits. The rest of the film is fairly desert drab looking, lots of browns and neutral colors. Overall it wasn't great, I didn't hate it, in fact there were plenty of things to like in it. The overall idea of the zombies having a hierarchy is pretty fun, they are smarter and higher functioning than what we assume. That's a cool concept. I liked some of the characters, Dave Bautista continues to impress with his roles, I just assumed when he stepped into acting he would be terrible. Unfortunately there's a lot of stuff that just doesn't work, it's super long, the last act is not great and I could give two shits about any one who made it to the end credits. They did a nice job creating back story for everyone but it took way too long. The weird slow motion intros to everyone with promo shots just seemed so weird to me. It could have had way more gore too, there were a few nice moments of it but a majority of it was CG bullet splats going through zombies. I had low expectations for this and it surpassed them, it's not a good movie but it's mindless entertainment that may be worth checking out for some.
