So, I was umming and aahing as to what to choose for my deep cut's selection, Italian? UK? Electronic?

Even though it's a relatively new find for me I finally dumped on this one as I guess it typifies a couple of my main musical influences outside the realm of the soundtrack. Firstly, I've had a long time passion for all things funky, from jazz to soul to plain funk. Secondly, I'm always on the look out for any electronic oddities particularly from the early pre digital era.

Apologies if this record is already well known to the more experienced ost collector, I'm a relative newcomer to the genre compared to others here. I had not seen mention of it at STBC and felt it deserved more than a fleeting jpeg in the now spinning thread.

So, please read, watch and listen to the one and only unknown king of showbiz that is Vic Ceasar, with his 1977 mooged out funky disco rock soundtrack to the kung fu blacksploitation B movie 'BARE KNUCKLES'.

Here's the 1977 theatrical trailer

I've not seen the movie yet, but it looks all kinds of ridiculous. The trailer seems so promising, it's all there guns, girls, bar brawls, car chases, kung fu and... Bare knuckles!

Lets kick off with the first track from the LP.
I just love the down tempo head nodding beat with the spooky, suspenceful moog, or is it arp, synth lines wafting in and out. Also check the great moogy breakdown towards the end.

The next few cuts I've had to rip from my own dirty unofficial boot of this lp as the orginal is as rare as hens teeth. This boot however seems to be all over the place. As far as boots go this is run of the mill in terms of sound quality, maybe slightly above average. I'm curious to hear how it compares to an original press.
Anyway on with the music, heres the second cut from record titled 'Shakedown' the supposed disco theme that is alluded to on the cover of the lp is at it's strongest on this track. I love the huge guitar solo that runs through the middle of it.

Next up one of the few quieter, more atmospheric, moments of the score wit someh classic bumbling moog action on 'Essex Exit'

Now for some typical fat cheesey moog pop goodness in the form of the laid back and oddly titled 'Charing Cross'. I'm sucker for these hazy sunshine drenched moog synthlines.

Atypical from most scores there is a real shortage of suspenceful and atmospheric peices to be found here, but there is this little gem.

Here Vic adds some latin flavour with the track 'LA Montage'

I'll leave you with the other more typical blacksploitation tune from the album 'Gonna Getcha' Along with some great stills from the movie.

If you hadn't noticed the record is allegedly released on Gucci fashion House's short lived record label Gucci Records. There are a couple of other releases on the label, not sure how much truth is in this story but it certainly ties in with Mr Ceasar's aspirations and apparent lifestyle.

Vic Ceasar, the man responsible for this funky beast seems to be somewhat of an enigma. Aside from scoring this soundtrack the man has numerous other accolades attached to his name. He scored and acted in another obscure b movie 'alice goodbody'. He also acted in what looks to be one of the worst ever mafia movies ever made 'Massacre Mafia Style'. He scored a campaign song for Richard Nixon entitled 'Nixon's the one'. He was apparently shacked up in the playboy mansion for a number of years, played piano for Marilyn Monro and, got high with Bobby Kennedy and Sammy Davis Jr. If interested please check the links below for more on the man.

It's late here. I Hope I have not made too many spelling/grammatical mistakes.
Hope you've dug it,

This is why I am so glad Deep Cuts have taken off. Without, it might have been years before I heard this.

Extra props for upping your own rips! (funny how we call 'em rips even when they were recorded from vinyl instead of ripped from a CD)

Great stuff Dollarhyde!

Thanks so much for posting Dollarhyde, this soundtrack is completely up my alley. I find that I like a lot of the stuff you post about on STBC, so i'll be keeping an eye on you more, in a completely non-creepy capacity of course. Just off the back of what you've said here's a few things you may or not like, all still available. All the best and I look forward to more of your recommendations.

Great minds think alike :) . I have that last exit lp, was a long time want of mine some years ago. Sweet and fool like a child is the joint. I'm also aware of some of those other lps. Those jazzman grail reissues are already difficult to pick up (uncle funkenstien).Let me check the other videos you posted.

Glad the post has been appreciated. I wanted to write more about Vic Ceasar himself. The guy had an interesting life and I'm curious to know how prolofic he really was. He started out as a drummer, then began singing, apparently at the recommendation of frank sinatra. It's all in those links at the end of the post anyway.

This is great @dollarhyde. I have this too (bootleg of course) and considered it when I was doing my Deep Cut. This is soooo seventies I just love everything about it.

I'm glad you added the links about the man himself as I never thought to research him. Sounds like an interesting fellow indeed! Someone needs to make a movie about this guy!

My favorite quote from the second article you posted...
"Caesar holds the top score in Donkey Kong at the Playboy Mansion"

LOL! That is just so perfect! :-)
