Invada Records Proudly presents the release of a Synth-Heavy Score from one of the Industry's most Creative Composers; Craig Safan's music to the 1985 20th Century Fox Science Fiction Thriller.

Famous for his score to the timeless classic The Last Star Fighter, as well as A Nightmare on Elm Street, Part IV and (amazingly) the hit series Cheers!
Safan's film music is notable for its clever use of electronics, and Warning Sign is no different. Recorded using a Synclavier Synthesizer - an incredibly expensive piece of kit at the time - the score is fully electronic but no less effective than his orchestral work, and provides an entertaining and futuristic soundscape for the story of a man-made virus that is accidentally released into its laboratory, turning its workers into zombies.

Due to the science fiction and horror overtones, the Synclavier creates an appropriate atmosphere which Safan layers with different effects, from an electric piano that illustrates a desolate location in the film's early stages to the use of metallic effects as percussion for the chemically-affected staff. Safan weaves dissonant sounds to suggest chaos and paranoia, and innovatively synthesises human voices to convey a sense of tortured souls to those infected. What follows is an intense score where the foreboding turns to reality with an eerie and uncomfortable texture, broken only by a beautiful and warm melody for the resolution and end credits, where all is well.

Following on from dark and intense soundtracks such as Cliff Martinez's Drive, and Geoff Barrow and Ben Salisbury's DROKK, Invada Records presents Warning Sign in a new special edition that features an expanded version of Craig Safan's original 1985 LP program, along with 15 unreleased cues presented as bonus tracks.

The release features new artwork by Marc Bessant (Portishead / DROKK etc), liner notes by Craig Safan himself, presenting a comprehensive package befitting one of the scores that was an important part of the 80s craze of electronic film music.

I was just thinking this release hasn't been plugged enough on this forum. I think it looks like an amazing release and a lot of work gone into it. Will defiantly be ordering.

Also, this hive on activity from official Invada channels recently, being a Keymaster, does this mean many more Invada soundtrack releases on the way?

Maybe Geoff could throw in a new Portishead release as well!! ;)

@phillball1974

yep - its a specialist score, but hopefully a lot of the people that have picked up the likes of chopping mall / surf nazi's etc will check it out.. we love it anyway ..

in regard to future soundtracks.. first and foremost we have Warning Sign / Hannibal (4 double LP's!!) / OldBoy (with our bud's Milan) to shift..

We hope to announce one more this week coming - which will be on CD this year and the vinyl will be january / February time..

after that there are a few more in the pipeline - but they will be released alongside our non soundtrack releases.

we have an unreleased BEAK> (geoffs other band) Vinyl compilation upcoming as well as a killer Sleaford Mods release..

thanks for the support and props though..

Let's not forget that it was also Craig Safan, rather than Tangerine Dream, who composed the killer jam "Confrontation" for Michael Mann's THIEF. In fact, it seems that Mann liked it so much, he had his composer Michel Rubini rework it as "Graham's Theme" for MANHUNTER:

From 4mins, after Robert Prosky takes the hit.

And Safan had his score for Wolfen pulled from the final movie. Much as I love James Horner's, it'd be great to here Safan's alternate, more atonal score in full someday...

Any chance Invada releases could be distributed online some day within the U.S.? Like through Experimedia, Forced Exposure, or LITA? That Red Eye distro does absolutely nothing for us that live too far from record shops, or have record shops that carry nothing but dusty old cheap used crap. My nearest record shop that would carry something from Invada is over two hours away. I'm just tired of missing out on these great records!

@disco Intrada released Safan's complete score for Wolfen a few years ago. It's only on CD but it is available :)

@ghostfires

at the moment we exclusively go through RedEye - and i hear your pain...

i am personally working on a situation where people in the U.S can order regularly from a mail-order company over there..

Unfortunately its just the nature of the beast with us manufacturing & being a European label. Import costs and exchange rates are always gonna be an issue somewhere..

Normally if its a big record we are releasing we will license it to a U.S label such as Ipecac or Stones Throw, but with a soundtrack that there are only 750 of - its a bit more bespoke & that unfortunately makes it a bit more expensive..

i am trying hard to make things as cost effective as possible though. For example with Hannibal we are personally swallowing half of the shipping costs overseas.

Hopefully things will change though..

Amazon usually has good prices on the Invada releases. That is where I picked up a few.

I got this today (From Amazon) and have just listened to it. I thought it was excellent, and it reminded a bit of Simon Boswell in places. Lots of creepy synth passages and some early 'sampling' of voices. Works very, very well as a standalone.

The only annoying thing is that I lost the bloody download card!

[/quote]Mine didn't even have one (and I didn't even realize it was supposed to until now)! Agreed, though, it is a lovely score and the extra cues are really, really nice to have. Sound and content wise, it's an upgrade from the original from my perspective.

Thanks for the offer, but luckily I managed to find it! It must have fallen out when I got home - just spotted it on the floor.
