this is another perfect example how underwater and space sounds go togehter (sometimes). stunning record from 1967 by De Wolfes International Studio Group. the composer behind this is Eric Towren.
this particular one has some orchestrated tunes on side A and some more experimental darker cues on side B. the subitile "Music For Space And Oceanographic Science" gives you an idea what this is all about. the cover art reminds of early italian libraries on Leonardi, Lupus, Montecarlo, Metropole or Grifo...

another very nice and cheap one is volume 10 (Water) on the often overlooked Spectrum Mood Library label. this one consists of many wet cues. most of them go deep below the water surface for sure. i like this one a lot. many different styles and sound experiments. very much in the same vein as the Chappell one from the AV series that i have mentioned earlier. you get many different aspects and impressions of how underwater music can sound like.

the french Pierre Dutour made some fine library music for Charles Talar, Chappell and Tele Music to name a few. especially his Top Fiction on Tele Music are highly recommended. he did some stuff for the great Patchwork labet too. #69 is a big underwater record and needs to be mentioned here. early 80s mellow synth and ambient stuff that puts you in the dream mode. i love how the sleeve colours matches the theme of the record.

time for some nonsense...

what would you think, does a austrian early 80s, a canadian late 80s and a italian early 70s underwater themed library record have in common? i would say absolutely nothing. i would even claim the artists never ever heard of each other. even the music styles are completely different on every single one. only thing that connects them is a big wave on the cover.

to sum it up:
- same image motif
- same music theme
- different music styles
- different artists
- fu**ing awasome nonsense
- i like library music

next up is a soundtrack that was made for a BBC documentary series called Discoveries Underwater. have never seen it but the music alone must have made it a great watch. wonderful electronic ambient stuff with the perfect late 80s underwater feel. highly recommended. because it is still widely unknown, it is available for cheap...

time to bring this bubbly old thread back to life!

here we have a cheap little title from the Sound Stage series made by the [relatively] unknown Monica Beale. nice atmospheric nature related music with a helathy load of underwater cues (Diver, Secrets Of The Deep, Merlin, Ebb And Flow, Waves, Floating World)

another weird one is this album made of field recordings. basically it's fish and sea animals recorded underwater (where else?). so funny to listen to that one. there is another similar record on Folkways but i like this one for the other sounds being recorded underwater. rain, ice flow, certain ships, explosions and torpedos under water are sounds you will not hear every day, haha!

american library music is still a mystery and criminally overlooked. so many unknown stuff to discover still. William B. Tanner's numerous series, Sam Fox catalogue, NFL Music Library, Robert Hall productions and all those custom Capitol series are driving me crazy only thinking about them. even discogs lists the tip of the iceberg only. the best thing about these is that they are very cheap still. to this day i could discover only a handful of underwater cues...

one that is fairly easy to find is number 39 - Mind Impact. a exquisite horror themed one from the Media Music - The Professional series. super creepy record with three underwater cues: Underwater, The Unknown and The Deep

get a copy if you see it. it's great!

this is without a doubt one of my favourite american library records. lazy vocals mixed with quirky electronics á la Boneschi. the stuff dreams are made of and some bubbly stuff on there, too! library does not get much better than this...

there is a nice little review on the toys and techniques blog (no more active i believe), that has put it quite well:

"Housed in a stock white sleeve and attributed only to "Robert Hall Productions," this little library LP is a real mystery to me. Who could have written such lovely music? I'm not really sure but the vibe here -- soft focus sunshine folk with electronics -- is right in the sweet spot of 70s library. Half the tracks are electronic abstractions for use in nature documentaries about coral reefs and insects. The other half is pure after-school special -- wordless vocals, lazily plucked acoustic guitar, weird melodic moogery..."

@million I haven't heard of that one, but the tracks sound nice on YouTube.

I was listening to Riflessi this morning. I don't think it's an underwater theme by name, but "Ultime Luci" to me feels like it would be a great cue for an underwater scene. I don't speak Italian but would guess the track translates to something like "sunset" (8 years of Latin class must be good for something?!?)

8 years of Latin, Tex? Eight!? The Board of Education in Texas does know that "Latin America" doesn't actually speak Latin, right? Holy smokes.
