Figured I'd make a thread for non-soundtrack or library release stuff.

Bong Load Records' website just put up two limited Beck reissues. Odelay and Mellow Gold are being officially reissued on limited edition colored vinyl, 2016 numbered copies of each.

Both albums have been out of print for a while, and prices on the 4LP ORG reissue of Odelay are pretty steep. I think these will both sell out quickly.

**EDIT - Odelay showed as sold out for a little while but is available again as of 11:55 am cst.

Odelay is weird, there is a standard reissue in the usa by geffen coming out still no preorders and then there is a limited 180 gram coming from universal in euro.
I had a preoder for the euro one through soundstage which i just cancelled and got this instead.
Perhaps i'll get a regular standard one at retail as well.
I bought both of the bong load ones, thanks for the heads up.

This is very tempting, but I'll probably pass at this point. My Def Jam copy is in pretty good shape. There was some other label that reissued this a few years back. I'm not sure if that reissue was affiliated with Rick Rubin, Russell Simmons, of Def Jam records. This edition being released sounds like it's going to be a good one though. At least it's at a decent price.

Very classy Kickstarter campaign announced for the Voyager gold record. 3LPs in old fashioned tip-on sleeves w/ gold foil printing, a hardbound color book, and an art print housed in a cloth covered box. $98.

Sadly it will not be gold-plated copper :)

Here's a video of Carl Sagan talking about the Voyager records: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEEb6mQtHE0

20% of the net proceeds will be donated to the Carl Sagan Institute.

@texasvinyl

well...had to do it. thats a great package and I hope they make it happen. Important for music, vinyl, analog recording, and exploration, truly a beautiful item to add to the collection. probably a very unique and expansive listening experience.

Voyager crossed 5,000 box set orders (holy crap) so they added an enamel pin and slip mat to the package.

I just got Secret Stash's newest compilation (part 5 of 6), this time featuring the Midas label, it's a good one if you like soul. Sad to see I don't think these have been selling well. I did the subscription for the six back in 2014 (they are dealing with crippling plant backups too like so many other labels). Secret Stash is one of my favorite non-OST labels. A lot of love goes into putting these together..

This is really, really fucking good. I need to listen to it like a hundred more times, but it's a contender for my album of the year pick.

They sold out lickety split, but a black vinyl repress was just announced. Gets my highest recommendation. Dope^2

Here's the write up from the yussef kamaal bandcamp (where you can order a copy on vinyl or digital!):

The borders between London’s musical tribes have always been porous. For Yussef Kamaal, the sound of the capital – with its hum of jungle, grime and broken beat – has shaped a self-taught, UK-tipped approach to playing jazz. In the states, the genre’s long-running to-and-fro with hip hop – from Robert Glasper to Kamasi Washington – has reimagined it within US culture. On Black Focus, Yussef Kamaal frame jazz inside the bass-saturated, pirate radio broadcasts of London.

Taking inspiration from the anything-goes spirit of ‘70s jazz-funk, on albums by Herbie Hancock or the Mahavishnu Orchestra, it’s a loose template with plenty of room to experiment. The pair, made up of Yussef Dayes and Kamaal Williams (aka Henry Wu), have had little in the way of formal training. Instead, their musical tastes – and approach to playing – are indebted to Thelonious Monk’s piano as much as the drum programming of Kaidi Tatham.

“It's all about the drums and the keys,” Williams says. “Not to take anything from anyone else, but that's where it all originates from: the chords, the rhythm of the chords and the drums.” Born out of a one-off live session to perform Williams’ solo material for Boiler Room, it soon became a project in its own right. Coming together as Yussef Kamaal, they played a series of live shows where little more than a chord progression would be planned before taking to the stage

Bringing that unspoken understanding to the recording sessions (engineered by Malcolm Catto of The Heliocentrics), the unplanned, telepathically spawned grooves retain the raw energy of their live shows. “It's not so much about complete arrangement, it's more about flow,” Dayes says. “A lot of the tracks are just made spontaneously – Henry will be playing two chords, I'll fill in the groove and we'll just leave the arrangement naturally.”

Both hail from South East London, crossing paths in 2007 as teenagers playing their first pub gigs around Peckham and Camberwell. Dayes drums for cosmically-inclined, afrobeat outfit United Vibrations, while Williams – on top of drumming and playing keys in different incarnations over the years – has made waves with his solo, synth-draped house 12"s for much-fêted labels like 22a and Rhythm Section.

Quite lovely as well, $1000000. Definitely has that unmistakeable 1990s musk. I listened to plenty of St Germaine back then. Particularly tourist on Blue Note.
