That Kamasi Washington is infallible - definitely looking to pick this up on the drop.

Random observation: Gregory Porter's "Liquid Spirit" playing during the cocktail party scene in the Avengers. Every now and again, it is important to remember that that song exists.

@texasvinyl - Am I correct that you're in Dallas? We're getting a Josey Records in my town, should I be excited?

Wait, they're opening a second store? Those guys are nuts. They already have a 10,000+ sq ft store here that they aren't anywhere close to filling up. I can't imagine selling records with that kind of overhead.

They have a lot of used vinyl, probably 90% used / 10% new. They usually price close to market but have decent inventory. I have bought good records there but have yet to find a really great one.

I've been on the lookout for a clean copy of Sextant for some time now. Finally scored mint copy for $15 at the record show. It's my favorite Hancock album.

This song made my drive home a real treat tonight. I hadn't listened to this classic soul jazz album from mid-70s Seattle (live at the Trojan Horse Restaurant!) by multi-instrumentalist Johnny Lewis and his band for a few years. Got home and spun both sides of Shuckin' & Jivin'. Star of the show here, James "Moody" Thompson on the keys, just recently passed away. Love N' Haight & Ubiquity re-pressed it on vinyl in '98, still available on CD (and reasonably-priced vinyl on discogs). Raw, soulful and wonderful.

...and another thing!

Just heard this story from NPR: http://www.npr.org/2015/05/27/410065414 ... vocabulary

Summary: Ornette Coleman jammed with some of his fans and they just released the recordings without, he says, his permission. The question is, if the artist didn't want you to buy his record, and you suspect it may be pulled, therefore increasing it's trade value, would you buy it?

It's only available for download and CD, no vinyl. Easy decision for me - no buy. I don't think I'd enjoy him as much apart from with his own groups.

Holy shit, this is really good. Hadn't heard it, but there isn't a Miles record I don't like so it was an automatic buy. Add this one to your want list! It's up there with Live-Evil and Get Up With It. The A side sounds like Hendrix and Miles dropped acid and cranked out a 20-minute psych rock jam.

BACK FROM THE DEAD LIKE A RESURRECTION

Well, a little over a year ago I posted in this thread that I was intrigued by the Superior Viaduct release of Mingus' opus, The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady and after reading largely favorable reviews, I stumbled across a copy at my local today. It was used, NM/ VG+, and $10. A no-brainer.

@Mateo - I just sold a used copy of this to a teenage girl at my shop on Saturday. I asked, "Are you a big Mingus fan?" She said, "I've actually never heard of him, but when I saw that title, I had to put Sgt. Pepper back."

The Superior Viaduct issue is dope.

Yeah, so that lady is amazing. The exact opposite happened at my local. This dude gets to talking with my friend who works at the shop about jazz and eventually picks out this record to buy. Two days later he brings it back, says, "I'm not ready for this" and trades it in! He dinged up the corners a bit, but I'm not bothered since I have another copy. And agreed, it sounds very good.

Hm... do you need an instagram account to browser a public account? if not, you can see that jazz makes up more than 1/3 of my IG posts:

Those are all good records, Tex. Moan in the AM is a killer album, man. I've been having quite a Joe Henderson renaissance of late, particularly his '72-'76 Milestone albums. Morgan was one of my gateway drugs when I first started collecting Jazz. Sidewinder and Gigolo were two particularly influential albums for me.

I never set out to enjoy the vibes, particularly in latin-influenced soul-jazz, and by a white guy no less. Nevertheless, here I sit actively listening to Cal Tjader right now. Specifically the sublime Agua Dulce and his landmark The Prophet with its oft-sampled cut, Aquarius. I will own these on wax sooner than later, but for now, digital will have to suffice. Off to Discogs...

Crushing some CTI releases lately and picked up these two Milt Jackson beauties on Discogs last week. Both first presses, Sunflower is an oft-reissued classing and while Olinga is long out of print, it is a major-minor in its own right.
