Soul Makossa - Manu Dibango

Soul Makossa is a terrific album -- funky, with Latin and African influences. The liner notes from Manu Dibango call it "black ivory soul."

Seattle's modern jazz scene has been cooking lately, here are a couple names to know: Fantastically groovy Industrial Revelation (should have a new album this year) and saxophone player Skerik, here with Omaha Diner - Bobby Previte, Charlie Hunter, Steven Bernstein. He plays with a ton of people: Stanton Moore in Garage A Trois, Les Claypool, Mad Season, Dead Kenny G's, , Critters Buggin', and recently released an album as DRKWAV with John Medeski and Adam Deitch.

Skerik is every jam band's horn player. It's unreal. He's the Horn-In-Residence in Seattle. I've seen him making cameos at live shows going back to at least 2000. Not all those bands are my cup of tea, but the guy is quite a talent.

Donald Byrd is one of my favorite jazz artists with albums that cover a lot of different genres, and his 1975 'Places and Spaces' is one of the best funk-jazz efforts by Byrd or anyone else.

My favorite track is the title track Places and Spaces...arranged and produced by Larry & Fonce Mizell. The musicianship, arrangement and production are crazy good.

If you see a clean copy of the original (black blue note "b" on a solid blue label) for 15-20 don't let it go! This one is essential.

**edit, found the YouTube... they snap into a serious groove at 1:45.

Great record. Stepping Into Tomorrow, also from 1975, is another great Byrd record. Thanks for the tip on pressings.

On another note, do any fellow STBC Jazz Dabblers have any first hand experience with the Superior Viaduct reissue of Alice Coltrane's A Monastic Trio?

I grabbed this today on a whim because of the great cover art and Eddie Russ on the keys. It is currently making the funk-jazz sex to my ears. 'Tornado' and 'Escanaba Beat' are both solid tracks.

Still getting my jazz fix, this time with a 1961 LP called 'The Quota' from the Jimmy Heath Sextet. This is a pretty straightforward but quality record with some excellent musicianship on display. The sextet is a strong one with trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, Julius Watkins on the french horn, Jimmy Heath on tenor sax, Cedar Walton (my gravatar!) on the piano, and Percy and Al Hearth on bass and drums.

I like two tracks, Bells and Horns (fast) and When Sunny Gets Blue (slow)

I've got to post this record for the board. It's one of the better new jazz releases I've heard. McCraven recorded 48 hours of improvisation performances at The Bedford in Chicago and then cut and pasted sections, added keyboard parts, synth pads and plug-ins over the loops.

The result is a great organic jazz sound that has been reworked in post to achieve a really chill downtempo sound.

9.0/10

The album comes as a nice 2LP in a heavy tip-on gatefold jacket.

Big band jazz from Trovajoli. A nice package from Contempo-- glossy gatefold + 8-page book with liner notes in Italian+English & photos.

Pressing is a tad noisy, same plant that Cindelic has been using that isn't my favorite. The label also missed an error in test press review that occurs towards the end of the third track.

Loving this thread. Jazz is a big passion of mine. Some great modern artists out there at the min. Saw this guy last year over here in Birmingham, one of my gigs of the year. His latest album has come out on Blue Note, called Rising Son. Its very much hard bop informed but has a bit of a modern twist with less syncopated drumming, creating some very deep grooves! The (double) LP is out in the US only.

Ps. Agree, Ole is a total masterpiece, I could listen the the title track all day long and still be amazed by it!

I am a big fan of Horo records and the Jazz a Confronto series. I only have a few of them, but I lust after most of them.

I feel badly I haven't been participating more on this thread (and others on the forum) but posting LPs on instagram seems to keep me from feeling like I should post them anywhere else.

but, here is one of the pics I recently took for instagram. The 4lp Muzyka Krzysztofa Komedy box - and to keep in the spirit of the forum, some of the tunes are from soundtracks - most notably Knife In the Water.

It probably won't drop on wax cos it's over 2 hours long, but the Kamasi Washington album 'The Epic' on Brainfeeder Records is ridiculously good for a modern day jazz release.

I will be adding to this thread with some vinyl contributions soon.
