Which one's are your favorites so far? I listened to 6 this morning and thought it was pretty damn good.

I’ve seen a couple Jazz is Dead releases around but I haven’t listened to any of them. The one I was looking at was the Roy Ayers one. I think its vol. 2. I really should check them out. I’ll be honest though I’ve only heard of Ayers and Bartz the rest of the performers are new to me.

No 2 is available again at their bandcamp. Not sure how bad shipping is to since you are in the great North but at least the record is cheap at $25

I checked out tracks on JID002. Sounds amazing, might need to grab a couple of these the next Bandcamp friday thing.

What a good record. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the white label in the shop. Pressing quality is much better than the odeon Brazil press.

I wonder how many people are like me. My first real exposure to Joao Gilberto was in 1997 when I got the CD for the lost highway soundtrack

And Antonio Carlos Jobim! ;)

you know, I always had it backwards I guess. I thought this was a Gilberto song that was covered as an instrumental by Jobim for the version in the film. But really Jobim wrote the song (but not the lyrics) + did the arrangements for the 1961 joao gilberto LP. And then he released his piano version two years later in 1963. so first appearing on the joao gilberto LP in 1961 but always a jobim tune :)

My local shop got a copy. I can't justify spending $400 or what ever it was. The set looks amazing. The shop owner was contemplating just taking the copy for himself. He said he was gonna leave it out for sale for 2 weeks and if no one bought he was gonna just take it home.

Since I'm not well versed in Jazz I am looking for some suggestions from you fine folks. Lately I've been wanting more funk or psych infused Jazz. I've been listening to Roy Brooks The Free Slave, Ronnie Foster Two Headed Freap and Hancock's Sextant.

A big one for me that kinda started the Jazz ball rolling that I can suggest but I’m sure you already know is Headhunters by Herbie Hancock. Survival of the fittest and Straight from the gate by The Headhunters are great as well. I also really like Donald Byrds 70s albums. Ethiopian Knights and Street Lady are probably my favourites. Bennie Maupin’s albums are all great as well. Hope this helps.

Pretty much the same for me too @pete, and headhunters is an essential imo, need to have a think what else to recommend.

Thanks. I'm very familiar with Headhunters, love that album (I should have said that haha). I'll check out your other suggestions.

@scojo
That Black Widow cover alone sells me, I will be listening to that first. I also really enjoy what little Budd I've heard so I'll give that a listen as well.

Some good recommendations already!

Snagged a few new records today. Decent finds. Thembi is a late 80s reissue. The Lou Donaldson is a mid to late 60s stereo reissue not listed on discogs. Gildo is an original. The A side is all piano trio stuff, and on side B Larry Young plays organ on a couple and Kenny Burrell plays guitar on one track.
