It’s wonderful. Funny story - the book is a movie tie-in edition, it’s a really good adaptation. The older man you see is legendary character actor Tom Bell, I wrote and directed a short film which he starred in (his last film performance) where he played a puppet maker- loosely modelled on his Magic Toyshop role. This image makes me smile and remember quite a few stories/adventures from that shoot.

Now that's just lovely and very cool

I did back in high school. I ordered it though Reader's Digest magazine I think. I have no idea what happened to it.

Dorohedoro is very weird, I find it somewhat fascinating. I should catch up on that. I had read like 3 volumes of it I think. I spontaneously watch episodes from the Netflix series here and there when I can, but I'm thinking of getting a Kobo eReader and reading the manga on it. I really want to get a routine back for reading books. I received Quentin Tarantino's new one for Christmas: Cinema Speculation. I read one chapter, and the next one's are all based on one movie in particular, I'm thinking of watching them before I read their dedicated chapters. First post introduction chapter is for Bullit. Never watched it. It seems like a pretty good book, fun to read. I'm not the biggest Tarantino nerd but I do love when people talk about movies.

I love Dorohedoro, I just finished reading the series digitally and decided to grab the first volume hard copy. Not sure if I'll buy them all as theres 23 volumes but it's nice to have it physically.

I want to read that Tarantino book, been meaning to pick it up

This was a good read. I enjoyed the first third to half better than the rest and the end felt a bit rushed. If you're a dog lover (like me) you'll probably enjoy it. I'd give it a solid 3.5 out of 5. At this point I'm really not too critical of his books. I'm just thankful he is still publishing new stuff. He's 75 so at some point that wont be the case. Kings next book 'Holly' was just announced and I'm looking forward to it.

Still haven't dived in as I'm weirdly terrible at starting books these days, but will make it a high priority :)

If you want something that is really hard to put down these Pen Cage books from Greg Iles are pretty great. This is the second in the series. I do recommend starting with "The Quiet Game" if you consider starting the series.

Per @hatter's recommendation I read The Only Good Indians from Stephen Graham Jones. It's excellent and highly recommend others give it a read, it's a pretty quick read and if you're an audiobook person the audiobook is really good.

I then moved right into his other highly praised book, My Heart is a Chainsaw, I'm 3/4 of the way through it and it's been very fun. It's not as good as The Only Good Indians but it's written by a huge horror fan for horror fans. There's so many ridiculous references that probably go over a majority of peoples head if they are not neck deep in horror films like many of us are. Hoping to finish it up this week.

+1 for The Road. It is dark and grim with no big leaps in pacing, but the main character resonated strongly with me in memory of my father. I felt both the character and my dad shared a similar Finnish sisu. It has also been a grim joke here in my own family that should the apocalypse arrive, I would be the one keep moving on and trying to stay alive while the girls tell me the loss of the world as they know it would be too much to bear and they would want to just lay down and die. Fun conversations...

I finished the Southern Reach trilogy. Went through the first two books quickly, but Acceptance was a bit much at times. I both appreciated and also did not want to know so much of the backstory to Area X. Sometimes the alien mystery is better, but it still left enough unanswered to be enjoyable.

Now reading Recursion by Blake Crouch:


I was having a discussion with a friend about the ability to recall memories and she said I should read this book. I always like getting sci-fi book recommendations from friends.

I read these back to back so figured I would discuss them together. I'll reiterate what I said earlier when I was half way through Chainsaw, these are written by a horror fan for horror fans. Full of references from subtle to beat you over the head blunt. They are really fun and I appreciate how Jones writes, The Only Good Indians is a better book than both of these so read that first. That out of the way I'll get into each book a little bit.

Chainsaw focuses on Jade who is a teenage loner with a slasher film obsession, she likes horror but slashers are her bread & butter. She constantly talks about them any chance she gets, her history papers are always framed around slashers. She lives in a pretty remote location of Idaho in a town on a lake. Some rich folks decide to buy up a bunch of land across the lake and build huge mansions, their children attend the same school as Jade and she ends up building a relationship with a girl in her senior class. As the story progresses she gets her lifelong wish of being in a slasher film and the deaths start piling up around the town. I'll leave it there but really loved the character work here, Jade is a bit obnoxious but any one that has been around teenagers can attest they are kind of annoying just like we were when were teenagers. I know some people have criticized the main character as annoying and even seen some reviews say they couldn't get past her and stopped reading, I think they are all being hyperbolic and she's actually a pretty good main character with some clear issues that get revealed through out.

Reaper is a much better book, I think any one who liked Chainsaw will enjoy this. I can't really go into much detail about the plot with out spoiling parts of Chainsaw so I'll just say it's worth your time, the writing is better, they expand on characters you didn't expect and really make you feel something for a few of their relationships. They tone down the references a lot which I appreciated it, it did get a bit much at times in the first one, it feels more natural here. I really enjoyed Reaper and highly recommend these to everyone.


Next up is Dilla Time and I think I will tackle The Ceremonies after that.


On the manga front I finished Trigun Maximum, I loved it and sad to finally be done with it. Started reading Black Lagoon which is about a rag tag group of mercs. I watched the anime years ago and enjoyed it so figured I'd check out the source material.

Been meaning to post this. More of a "recent purchase" then a "now reading". I almost passed on this because of the price tag (without a King signature). So glad I didn't. This thing is OOP and has almost tripled in price on ebay. A lovely production from Centipede Press. I'm hoping they have more Bachman titles in the pipeline.

This is pretty much what I've been reading the first quarter of 2023

Greg Iles is a new author I've discovered. His Pen Cage books (Game,Angel) are really hard to put down. 24 read more like a movie (which it was made into "Trapped") and was more easy for my to put down. Still good though.

Trying to get caught up on my King this year. I'd read Box when it first came out but gave it a re-read as a refresher before finishing the trilogy. Enjoyed the first half of Fairy Tale better than the second and really enjoyed reading another adventure of Holly's in If It Bleeds.

Simon Clark is a hit or miss for me. The short story collection was pretty good but the others, "meh". I think his earlier works are better.

Short story collection from Freemen had some good stuff in it. The Road was good. Took a while for me to get into it. But still not really sure why it got so much attention. Teeth and Chalk Man were both quick reads that were pretty good. Not sure any of these will stay in my collection but not sorry to have read them.
