Im looking for a cheap but good turn table (£100ish)

I've seen a thorens TD 145 on eBay currently for £45

Any advise on this or what else to go for either new or vintage?

It won't get used a great deal and will have headphones attached to it only.

Cheers

Well I'm amazed know one here knows anything about record players! Either that or they don't want to help a brother out!

Anyway that thorens went for £140 in the end so still looking.

I would help, but I am really no expert and could find only german help pages in the internet.
All I know - and this doesn´t help really - is and was, that in Germany Thorens is state of the art!

Hello Phil,

I'm no expert. But cheap and good doesnt mix well with tt's.
If you want a new tt in that pricerange you must look for dj tt's like numark etc. If you want new audiophile, the entry levels start about 325€ with thorens, rega and pro-ject.
With vintage tt's you can search for dual, fisher, sony, pioneer, thorens(very good but its a higher pricerange) or vintage dj tt's like technics.
There's a lot of second hand tt's but the problem is you wont get guarantees. And the cost of a good needle/stylus starts at 80€.
If you dont know much about maintenance and technics, it will be worth to save more and invest in a new tt like a Thorens wich will keep at least halve of its value if you ever sell it again.
It all depends on your defenition of good.
Good luck in your search

Sorry, missed this Phil. If you are going used, Thorens are great. stick the older ones with armboards that allow for swapping arms in case you catch the bug later.

Feel free to email me any ebay links if you want my input. I've been around the vintage TT block more than a few times. john AT freshoj DOT com.

Thanks for the info. I will take you up on that John, thanks. I really am just looking for a secondary turntable that sounds good and won't destroy my records. Didn't really want to spend loads but also don't want the shitty crossley et al that will wreck my records.

I read an article saying you can get rega plannar 3 for £50 but in reality that doesn't seem true.

I could just get a project debut or something but for the amount it will get used I was hoping for cheaper!

Yeah its a good TT actually, paid £160 SH with no cartridge and I put on an old Ortofon 2M i had onto it. Its plugged into a headphone amp only but the soundstage is impressive.
