Ryan, good question.
With the choice of colors/variant it's never a random thing. For Last House we chose white vinyl for Mari's innocence and red vinyl for the aftermath of what happened to her.
Phantom Of The Opera will have a lot of black, white and clear mixes respecting the original 1925 feel. Cannibal Ferox will contain camouflage jungle colors and a lot of blood red.
… as you can see: for me it's all based on the feeling of the movie or colors associated with it. We don't just throw something together. With The Hills there was a lot of orange used in the movie's original poster artworks and there are a lot of night scenes that light up under the moon. Therefore we used the amber/GITD combination. We knew there was going to be audio loss with the GITD … but it just had to be done.
Like Kevin from WW used green and GITD for Re-animator, I don't think it was a random choice. It just fits.
Spencer from DW goes even further in this 'feeling' I know he feels all the details and colors of what the release should look like and has artists in his head when he plans a release… the results are beautiful.
I guess we're just a bunch of art-fags
