[quote=32193]I think quality CD or digital files on a good setup sound as good or better than vinyl. I greatly prefer the overall experience of vinyl and do most of my listening that way, and I think there is more joy in analog. CDs and FLAC sound great but aren’t much fun.

As for price, I am a Death Waltz subber, and they are also pretty darn expensive (though admittedly some of that is shipping cost…they are ~$47 USD before shipping cost). I think it comes to around $60 a pop for the DW subber copies in the US– same as Looper w/o the 7″. Pricey? Sure. And totally worth it. And Spencer already did the basic subscription thing and is obviously open to the idea.

Most of Mondo’s stuff is $20-25 with occasional releases going up to $30. Looper and Iron Giant B are the first two to go (quite a bit) above that. I agree, those two are expensive, and hopefully that price point is the rare exception since we’ll all go broke (to be fair, Iron Giant ‘A’ is $30 not $100 like ‘B’).

I am going to make an effort to be more positive on the board. Seems to have taken a bit of a negative turn of late. Let’s all try to vent our frustrations privately and keep this place a positive zone to share our love of the niche.

I don't think this discussion is negative - we are all able to express our view points on how these various labels treat us as listeners/buyers/rabid fans. If you have the money to throw at these crazy price releases, go for it.

I don't think the DW subber is a fair comparison at all - you're paying nearly $60 per album because of the international exchange rate and shipping. You did not encounter either of those factors when purchasing DIRECT from Mondo in person this past weekend. If anything, records should have been the cheapest they've ever been if Mondo actually cared about their customers because they didn't have to charge all the exchange rates, shipping, packaging for shipping, etc in order to get the record to you. Instead, they charged more than ever. Pretty crazy, really.

I think it's honestly impossible to convince those of us that find this to be insulting that it's okay to hoard the music this way, and for those that paid the price - you guys are just obviously more into the collecting aspect of buying vinyl than I or anyone else that might agree with me. That doesn't mean I like music more than you, or that your decisions are poor in comparison to mine...I have no problem with how you or anyone else purchases their music. My complaint still stands solely against Mondo for releasing music with more focus on the package than the actual music. They just do not get the music-listening community at all. All they understand is the collector community. Which I understand...the owner has written about his love for conventions, he posts pictures of STUFF all the time...he loves buying and collecting stuff...nostalgic stuff, and that's fine...that just expresses to me that the person that has been in charge of the Mondo record label doesn't really get into the vinyl album releases for anything other than putting out collectible items.

I wish there was a way to not support them...as I honestly would stop buying Mondo albums...but like I've said, the music is what is important to me...and so if Mondo has exclusive rights to an album on vinyl...I have to buy from them one way or another if I want to listen to the music I enjoy. Very sad that it has turned to this. I bought Maniac when it first came out from Mondo - it was so exciting to be in Texas, and actually moving to Austin when that came out...I was able to buy a really great soundtrack on vinyl from someone local...and then that turned into all this nonsense. Here's to hoping Spencer can turn them around!

I have the feeling there's a rush to take advantage of great return of vinyl and growing passion, in the age of streaming music, for music collecting.

Specially in the field of OST's new releases are now daily, with limited or ultralimited editions, followed perhaps by reprints that necessarily depreciate our investment.

OST's of absolutely unknown movies seeing the light with astonishing packaging. And mushrooming new labels.
I was thinking about, e.g., Priv4te Records, which prints 200 copies of the soundtrack of a XXX movie never heard before, with a free dildo, and we are ready to pay 100 bucks on Ebay or Discogs.

And now Mondo passes from usual $ 20 / $ 35 per issue to $ 70, with a "bonus" that is not so bonus...

....but, really, who can pass up a free dildo? New trend in vinyl: dildos included with every release. The more limited the release, the bigger the dildo. Blood-filled dildos (penis?) Bonus 7"... 7" dildo. Dildo. Who came up with that silly word anyway?

I hear dildos are really penetrating the vinyl market!

And I forgot to mention how much was Mondo "excited to finally share [Test pressings] with the die-hard Vinyl collectors out there", against a symbolic contribution of 200 USD, so symbolic that you don't know for what are you paying for...

@toosoonjunior I feel dildos are penetrating many of us here, right now...

It sounds like the overall summary is that sooner than later, due to these ridiculous additions to the market, vinyl will again crash.

Fine by me...it will make all these crazy expensive records dirt cheap, kind of like analog synths saw in the late '80s and early '90s when all the digital stuff became in vogue.

I'm not concerned about the overall value of my record collection. I take care of them all like an obsessive collector, but that's just because I have respect for my possessions. The true value of each record is meaningless, so if the vinyl market comes crashing down - and it forces some of these labels not to push buyers to the ultimate limit of our wallets, and just get back to providing the damn music we want to listen to...fine by me!

I don't think I can say it enough - but fuck buying a record for a stupid ass bag! Or a pink dildo. I get buying a record for a cool colour-way, especially if it is the same cost as the black or is within $5-8 difference, because you can appreciate the art of it and you'll see that every single time you play the record. How many times will you pull out the handmade bag for Looper, or the dildo for the porn music? Every time a friend comes over will you pull it out!?

Jonny Trunk has made a few comments over the last year or so, regarding "when did the cost of a soundtrack on vinyl creep up to £20+ as a standard price?" and he also mentioned recently the siliness of hyping a record with all that "tip-on gatefold blah blah blah..." guff. He attempts to keep all of his releases to a really good price so that EVERYONE who wants one can hopefully afford it! I'm very down with that.

I read another comment by a soundtrack collector on a different forum recently where he mentioned "coming across a forum which is quite interesting but where everyone blathers on about the silly colours of their records..." or words to that effect. I think we know what he was talking about there guys...

Btw, @texas -- if you have a spare blood filled dildo I'll buy or trade from you...I NEED THAT BLOOD FILLED DILDO!!!!!!!!!

If it's a friend with benefits maybe you would pull the dildo out every time... And maybe the burlap sack too if things are getting freaky, or maybe if the friend is just horrid looking

Hahaha yeah I guess you're right. The vinyl sack is the new grocery paper bag.

And I suppose you could also pull out the dildo at a dinner party if you're ready to run your guests off for the night...or to find out which ones are into swinging.

My being unable to afford a Looper LP when it drops today is making me feel utterly dildo'd in every orifice.....
and NOT in a good way! :P

@disco - dildo aside I'm sad about the price of Looper because A I love it & B I'm sure this is just a taste of things to come.

I can't afford to buy everything I like but when something comes that I do want is prefer not to have to skip meals to buy it.

Packaging looks great and all that, but this is too far imo.

Why would I need a canvas bag... Pass.

Also, it seems like they upped the price a bit if you look at the blog which has the price as "$55 / $65 with 7-Inch Record".

Yeah, I'm sure this is a nice release and everything. But I personally don't buy the whole fancy packaging=fancy pricing thing. I got this album, "Sister Devil" by the band "Sixx"; the packaging and bonuses are super nice. Very heavy jacket, heavily textured as well (like a fancy bible), embossed cover with gold foil highlights, double clear red LP, came with a poster, patch, etc. It's a beautiful release (much nicer than represented in the pictures), and it cost $25.

I know there's more to the price of releases than just the packaging (like licensing fees, which can be hefty), but I just… don't buy into it all. I dunno. Buy it and enjoy it, if you want to! That said… I will (unfortunately) pay next to ANYTHING for that 2001 release! :/

oh you got the 2LP Sixx ? I was a bit disappointed, I bought the picture disc when it came out, and I think the Die-Hard 2LP came out after and had I known, I'd have gone for that. all good though, the picture disc is really nice as well.

I'll trade you the CD for three of your vinyl copies. The artwork has special micro-printing!

Many "pass" in a die-hard fans and collectors board, and not a faster than light sold-out.
May it be a turning point, something like "Ok, you cannot give them anything in the meal, so take the bait"?
I know, I'm a romantic dreamer...
